It's real good. Not an all timer, but definitely one of the best from last year. Having no expectations going in is the best way to go about it.

Reading about it after watching and seeing the depth of some of the imagery was mind blowing.

Wish I could have seen it as through the eyes of a Korean the first time

So far I don't get how it would work since teaching English to Koreans is such a fundamental part of the plot

Teaching German to Texans wouldn't work

anyway, I liked how it seamlessly moved between different genres.

and even though it's not the same kinda movie, I recommend Burning, which is on Netflix.

pay attention to the camera work etc WRT people's placement in society (ie how the opening shot of the movie shows that one family literally 'below' everyone else). also pay attention to how specific events affect each family (notably the storm).

It's a really good movie. I thought his past movies like The Host and Snow Piercer were okay, but parasite really does some new stuff with its premise I don't see in many other movies. I mean the message it's trying to get across is not anything new, but the way it portrays it makes me laugh but also feel sickening at the same time.

Damn, yeah, definitely see Burning. I'd also recommend checking out some films from Hong Sangsoo - he's probably the least digestible and most obsessive of the four or five great South Korean directors, but he's also one of the most prolific and obsessive filmmakers of the past quarter century (he made fourteen movies in the 2010s - and that's considering he took a break during 2019 and didn't make anything).

Man, the 2010s was absolutely incredible for international and mid-budget/independent movies. I honestly think it was the best decade for movies since the 70s.

I agree, I went into the movie completely blind which probably played a role why I enjoyed it a lot.

It's a pretty crazy and bonkers movie though and if this was my first korean movie I watched, I would've assumed Koreans movies would be weird like this lol.

Yea not a fan.

As you pointed out about the seamless blend of genres, I just loved how Parasite took you from laughing to edge of your seat tension in a split second.

Not sure I've ever experienced that in another film

To be fair the Drunk scene was the only time I felt tense.

Rest of the movie felt like a comedy.

There are a bunch of subtle things that you can only understand if you ever lived in a poorer part of Korea. Like the smell thing is actually referring to a scent of fungus that the family all have a bit of smell to due to living in damp areas. There were a few other bunch of facts that I can't remember anymore but yeah it's supposed to be even more powerful if you were a Korean. As first world and technologically advanced as they are now, that also meant there's a greater divide to how rich the rich truly live and how poor the actually poor will live.

Which is why I don't get the point in an American remake
