Also ~~Jessie dies in the OG on the pillar when Shinra is trying to take down the plate, not after the reactor bombings~~ To the OP, the game does kinda expect that you have played/have knowledge of the original and that becomes more and more apparent as the game goes on. It's less that you need to know that information right now, and more that there are a lot of scenes that are basically meant to be hype moments for those that do know. Or at least that's my interpretation. It really depends what direction they take the sequel in. Sephiroth and Cloud's visions get explained at later points in the story not covered in this title (presumably, unless SE gets really stupid and completely forgets about the new players). You're meant to be in the dark for the most part. Outside of the dementor things you're seeing, it's following the major beats of the original fairly closely at this point. And due to some references, FFVII:R is basically made attuned to the player's knowledge of the previous one in mind. The stuff they put in resonates with veterans and can figure out exactly what's happening, but for new players it's also there to add to the mystery for when the story continues, such as the weird flashbacks/future visions. I actually kinda like it. Though as for the dementors, they'll fully explain what they are by the end of this game, so you don't have to worry about being out of the loop for that. She doesn't know everything, but she knows something is off. Sephiroth is more in the know because he's literally part of the Lifestream. So the future parts will basically be Aerith learning what's coming up and trying to stop Sephiroth.
