It's 2 different games set in different timelines. OG is named Aeris. Remake it's Aerith.

Which was due to a mistranslation. All official media, including the devs have confirmed her name is, was, and always meant to be Aerith.

Wrong. She's Aerith there as well. All the game files have her listed as Aerith when datamined. Additionally, if you use a sequence breaking glitch to skip her recruitment scene, the game automatically dumps her into your party named Aerith.

So the only place across all official mediums where she appears as "Aeris" is specifically the naming dialog in the localized version of the game.

Literally none of this is relevant to what I said. Her name in FFVII is Aeris, regardless of how it happened or what Squeenix did with the cash cow afterwards. Aeris is the objectively better name. FFVII is objectively better than all their spinoffs and the remake. Like I said, she's Aeris in literally the only media that matters.

I say this every time, but Marth was called Mars in the melee debug menu because there's no clear distinction between S and Th spelling from English to Japanese and vice versa. The way a japanese person would say Marth or Mars would sound similar, and that's how you get mistranslations, because they don't KNOW whether it should be S or Th. Iirc you can listen to Cloud say Sephiross in the Smash Bros reveal at any time

Fun fact: he was also called Mars in the English dub of the Fire Emblem anime, and was voiced by Shinji Ikari
