Hamsters are super loving and awesome pets, assuming you are awake when they are (tends to be evenings and mornings).

I don't mean to go on a soap box, but just some minor comments on hamster care that most people don't appreciate or realize. I hope this is helpful.

-they tend to want significantly larger cages than are typically used. They love having space, the more the better. 600 square inches is a good target for space on a single level.

-they tend to want larger wheels than are typically used. Something with a 9 to 12 inch diameter is good. If they cram inside a small wheel they can hurt themselves.

-as much bedding as possible within a cage is good. They love to dig.

-i highly recommend getting a container to use as a sand bath for for the cage. They will pee in it and clean themselves in it. You can focus on replacing the sand and don't need to clean the bedding as much. On a related note, the bigger the cage and the more bedding you use, the less you will need to clean. They won't stink it up as fast.

I actually bought them a big wheel from a friend of mine who makes wheels for all kinds of rodents, super smooth and quiet.

His cage is a little on the smaller side but we're looking for one a bit bigger

Hamsters are awesome. I've been working with mine, Scooter, trying to make him friendly. I have to distract him with food before I can pet him, otherwise he bites. I think he's getting used to it now though.

I had hamsters when I was 9-12 or so

I came home to one that my mom surprised me with and the first thing I noticed was him stuffing food up into his cheeks, so I named him Plumpy

That's awesome!

For cheap cages I know some people just buy big plastic bins from Walmart and cover the top with mesh. It's not the sexiest look but your kids might not care, idk.

He really is. If you give him food he doesn't like he throws it back out into the floor. lol

Apparently the reason the previous owner wanted to re-home him is because he killed their other Hamster.

If two hamsters are kept together, one will kill the other. They are naturally solitary. Rats, mice and guinea pigs are better choices of you want multiples. Pretty much anything really.

I wouldn't have guessed, since they're always in groups in pet shops. Oh well. That's good to know.

The hamsters you see in pet shops are typically babies and siblings, so they don't mind. Once they reach adulthood they become highly territorial.

You mean you didn't become Hamster-Man?
Also just know Hamsters eat their babies at times. I've had many Hamsters. The best I had though was a Chinese hamster called Scampi as apposed to Syrian. He used to slide through the cage bars and escape at times. Catching him then he would bite. Other than that though he was soft as a brush. Lived for around 5 years as apposed to the three my Syrian ones lived for. I also had a long haired Syrian hamster. We had him since birth because it was so unique for me to see along haired hamster.

The hamster biting reminded me of one of Rimmers stories from red Dwarf:

I had a pet lemming once. I loved that little lemming. I built him a little wall so he could hurl himself over it. He didn't want for anything. I'll never forget one Christmas I put my finger in his cage to give him some mince pie. He bit me! He sunk his teeth right into my fingers and wouldn't let go. In the end I had to smash his brains out against the wall. That little lemming broke my heart. The little git completely ruined my helicopter wallpaper.

I got the impression from my bros Hamster when she ate some of her babies she just couldn't look after how many she had. We bought her thinking she was male and just fat. Turns out she was actually a she and pregnant. Anyway once she gave birth we left her to it. This was back in our teens though.

It could be that, as well. It could be both. Maybe hamsters have a lot of reason to eat baby hamsters...
