The explosion might have compromised the structural integrity of the AT&T building The AT&T repair techs probably won't be allowed to start repairs until the crime scene investigation is done Fiber repairs on top of equipment replacement will take a while once that gets started. When a crime has been committed, it's pretty common for police to prevent repair work from beginning until they're done with the crime scene. The explosion would have caused the equivalent of a fiber cut along with possible physical network equipment (routers, switches, network racks, etc.) Other common causes of fiber cuts are 1_ car crashes hitting poles where aerial fiber is run between telephone poles and 2) construction companies digging in the wrong place and breaking buried fiber. Depending on the number of fibers that need to be repaired, it typically takes somewhere between 3 to 6 hours for fiber splicers to fix it. So it sounds like AT&T has likely rerouted a lot of traffic away from this hub, but there will be lots of places in the region that only have an available fiber path or only have AT&T service that runs through that particular building. Most of the time, the choice to just go with a single service provider is to save cost, but many companies don't consider the cost of an extended loss of service. It's quite possible that they're losing more money because of this outage than it would cost them to have a 2nd service provider that's fully redundant.
