btw I consider myself to have a better understanding because I went to school for polisci and econ, and am getting a masters in a policy-related field. I wouldn't call myself an expert by any means, but I think it's fair to say I have a more extensive background than most people. Especially in politics where my focus was more on political theory, comparative politics, and research methodologies than current events.

No, I don't think I understand them at all. Every time I focus on what I find to be an important aspect I'm told I'm missing the point entirely.

Yes, but like zeus said, it's mostly because the average person has no idea how our government works at all. Most people probably couldn't even tell you what any of the bill of rights are outside of the 1st and 2nd amendments, much less, understand any of the intricacies of our political systems

Most people in this country either care so little about politics that they don't vote, or they blindly vote for any horrible corporate turd that the DNC or RNC shits out. I don't think I'm an expert, I just think I know more than them.

I've always felt I've had a good understanding of good and evil which is what politics is.

The average person is incredibly dumb. It'd be hard not to know more than them even if you know almost nothing.

I literally work in local politics dealing with various policies. So yes. Unless your definition of 'public policy' is different from what I'm thinking I can say my knowledge is far more nuanced considering I actually work with the people in city hall.

You'll quickly learn that, when it comes to local politics, it's much less about political party and much more about who the dumbass is that tanked a five-year negotiation over a contract because they didn't like that someone went in and ran spell check on it. No joke; that actually happened. There's also gems like this one guy decided to bully the recording secretary because he wanted a transcript and not a set of minutes. So he gets pissy and started chewing her out right in front of everyone on the zoom meeting for 'lack of detail' (the set of minutes was much more detailed already than normal). Turns out he was trying to impress the mayor by showing he was effective and doing his job but didn't realize that the recording secretary also handled the mayors meetings and immediately told on him which did NOT end well for him.
