it's still stereotypical because they basically rolled in all East Asians' inability to pronounce certain sounds into just one group of them doing it. Chinese never have a problem with distinguishing "l" from "r", unlike what is shown here: That is definitely a Japanese thing.

People act like we're rioting and protesting and throwing hissy fits over the restaurant scene when in reality we just find the joke tasteless. Haven't seen the movie, but I'm assuming the only larger context I'm missing here is how a family is forced to learn to appreciate the spirit of xmas without the form or some such deal?

I think of the 80's as a time when minority groups were mostly just the butt of cheap jokes and were getting 2-d identities forced down their throats, like the watering down of foreign menus for commercial success in america. Then more in the 90's they used that traction to coopt the mechanism itself (e.g., richard simmons on whose line is it anyway) to gain enough clout to be viewed as distinct but 3-d people/subcultures. Then that broke the utility of subculture theory, and now we're generally too evolved to appreciate that bit of cultural puberty unless we either lived through it and appreciate the triumph, or are just bigots.
But I wasn't even alive in the 80s so I probably have a pretty glib view of the decade.
Edit: of course I'm just glossing over reactionary settling like controversy over white n-word portmanteau (sorry gfaqs blocks it) in the 00's and wooks in the 10's, butI think people are getting it sorted

I think low key stereotypical jokes are tolerated. But I understand that people get upset over it. Stereotypes to me aren't necessarily racist. Same with jokes. It depends on the context that they are being used. Stereotypes aren't jsut about race. Their are stereotypes forCalifornians, french,new york, british etc. They incumbent a lot of things and people. Now if someone is using a stereotype to put someone down that should obviously be called out. I just feel it's more gray then just straight up racism or soft racism. But I do understand why people get upset over it.

I was honestly just going off of the clip, how the family looks like their holiday's gone sideways and they've ended up at like the only open restaurant. Then I guessed the mispronunciation but goodwill in the song (and food presentation) fit into the cheesy, xmas-goes-wrong-but-the-real-xmas-was-the-family-we-made-along-the-way tripe

Honestly I don't think that movie had a consistent narrative or moral or anything. It's like a series of tangentially related plot lines. It kind of feels like a sitcom with multiple episodes strung into one narrative.
