I've never played any Yakuza games but this one looks really fun. Is it necessary to experience the previous games first?

It's a soft reboot, so no. There are little cameos, and some parts are better if you know what happened before, but it's very minor.

It's a turn based RPG. What kind of turn based RPG leaves bodies on the field?

You know, I want to love Y:LaD for trying something new this late in the series.

But I'm like 10 hours in and I'm still on the fence.

I knew it was going to be...wordy and fetch questy going in from the several other Yakuza games that I've played, but this feels more like it should have been called Yakuza: Like a Graphic Novel.

Every single time I go to a new objective, there's 20 minutes of story cutscenes to ease thru before a fight. Sure, I can wander the streets and grind mooks if that counts as "gameplay", but in 10 hours I'd be surprised if I've done anything other than press X to advance dialog for more than an hour.

I think there's good bones there, but it almost has the opposite problem as the other Yakuza games.

In the other Yakuza games, there comes a point where the random street fights become nothing more than trivial inconveniences in between advancing the story points, up until the last bit of each chapter. Being able to toss money to skip fights becomes a godsend.

In this one, there's almost the exact opposite problem. Every pink objective to advance the story turns into a full episode of "Yakuza: Like a Graphic Novel". Fight too much and the fights start turning into infinite chains of mooks summoning more mooks untill you bleed to death.

I'm not hating it, but I'm not loving it the way I've loved others in the series. I really like the concept, and that they're trying to add some fresh gameplay elements to the series, but I'm not sure if this particular title has the balance right. I keep plugging away at it waiting for it stop being a "press X" simulator, but it's starting to feel like a clicker more than an RPG or Yakuza game.

Gotta say after another day with it, I absolutely love that my "Mage/Healer" can get MP back by doing physical attacks. That's a great mechanic.

The game really does have good bones. Just...more talking slowly than Xenogears and I didn't think that was actually possible.

It's growing on me though as time goes on.

The characters in my party so far are actually likable.

Seems like a lot of fun. Although not needed I feel the need to play the other games first. I will for sure play this one day though.

I played 0-2 on gamepass as they came out this year and they announced 3-6 for gamepass recently so I'll have played them all eventually

Nice. I'm just in the process of buying them on PS4. I've only played 0 at this point but I loved it.

I feel like the beginning is extra heavy on cutscenes. Once you hit chapter 5 or so I feel like the pacing becomes a lot smoother especially when you have so many funny side quests to mix in.

Yeah, I'm mid-5 now and I'm really starting to dig it.

I love everything about Nanba as he grows. I can't even assign him a classical class...he's not a healer. He's not a battle mage. He's not a conjuror...but I love his whole skillset.

Hostess is a good one for him. I really didn't change any classes besides Adachi to enforcer. You carry over certain skills and the stats you gain from class level up bonus. Currently grinding for the super final dungeon it's recommended to have multiple jobs to lvl 99

alright, mid CH5 doing tons of sidequests and I'm loving everything about Y:LaD now. I knew it had good bones, but damn if the first 4 chapters weren't absolutely brutal with the exposition and worldbuilding. like, i get it...but we're what, 10 games deep into the Yakuza world at this point? who picked this up blind and needed 12 hours of exposition to understand how any mafia works?

its got the maudlin/goofy tone of all the previous Yakuza games that I've played, and still feels really fresh with the new RPG combat system, and i love that they went there to try something new so combat doesn't feel like a bad PS2 3rd person brawler.

this game really is a gem once you get past the first dozen hours or so. its fun, and y'all know how much i hate fun and mirth ordinarily.

Two minor irritations though that I'm going to have to learn to cope with thru the entire game:

Ichiban has a resting smug face I just want to punch every time he opens his mouth. The man IS a buffoon, and his face is just so...punchable.

The "Should i open it" dialog every single time I find a silver safe after getting the silver skeleton key in CH4. Yes, you fucking Nonce, I'm not looking for this chest twice. Open the goddamned thing since I'm standing next to it. Unless some of them turn out to be Mimics later in the game, why would I ever say, "Nah, let it be?"

Not sure if it constitutes as a spoiler but yeah there are mimics but they're not an issue so the dialogue really is unneeded. I did all the sub stories and part time hero work. Still grinding for the super final millennium tower. I've got about three jobs to 99 on all my characters

Be aware you can open safes more than once. Since they contain some of the job xp boosting items, this is pretty important. No idea what causes them to respawn though.

I feel like the job system and level system is poorly paced. You have like 10 jobs and yet each job levels significantly slower than your overall level. By the time you hit level 99, you will have one job at 50 if you never swapped. I feel like this pacing is backwards and makes no sense. The main stat upgrades being tied to job level and not character level also mean that for everything except the super final post game dungeon, it's far more efficient to never swap jobs or at least to only swap once and early on.

Also swapping main girl to idol makes the game 50x times easier. Idol is broken.
