Found a woman under a horse with a broken leg. I helped the horse off her. Then she asked me to help get her home.

If you want to break immersion you can just ditch the pelt and the trapper automatically receives it - you just don't get the munneh

I figured legendary pelts must have some kind of loss-protection mechanic because that would fucking suck if it didn't, but I didn't want to chance it. I'm sure she managed to crawl home just fine.

You keep the pelt for clothes at the trapper, but you don't the money for selling it.
And I've been there before. I've also left many needy people in the dust because I wanted to go somewhere else and I didn't want to go far out of my way to take them wherever. Of course there were many times where I did go out of my way to help people. Sometimes it's hard for me to be a jerk in video games.
