Haven't posted much lately and got modded for mentioning a subscription site by name, that some content creators use for porn. So, I went to the Message board rules and kind of left more confused...

"Offensive Material
Posting offensive content is not permitted on GameFAQs. This includes linking to or posting content containing sexually explicit material, promoting the sexualization of minors, explicitly promoting terrorism or hate speech, and images or video of real-world violence."

I didn't "link" and I don't think that posting name of a site, that can be used for porn but isn't solely used for porn is the same as "posting content containing sexually explicit material"

So, I guess my point is/are:

1) if posting the name of a site that hosts some explicit material is against rules, why isn't that clearly stated in the rules? (Is there a more in depth rule list I'm missing?)

2) the site mentioned has content behind a paywall. If that website which hosts some explicit content cannot be mentioned by name, why can other websites which host explicit content not behind a pay wall (i.e. Twitter) be referenced by name and linked to?

(I'm not against Twitter being linked to/mentioned, but more curious about the blatant inconsistency here in the rules/enforcement of rules).

Oops topic title error: about how*

Edit: what is funny is the moderation wasn't even suggesting the site, or discussing offensive material, it was a quick joke. Didn't even think about the website hosting some explicit material

The rules here are simple. They are whatever the mods feel like them being at any given point in time.

How come Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler can be mentioned? Is it because they are a part of pop culture basically?

the "official" rules (take with a grain of salt as it was a lead who stated it) is: you cannot link to a porn site, you cannot name a porn site if it ends in a .com, you cannot hint towards the name if it ends in a .com, you cannot have the name/logo showing in images/videos

So what does this mean: don't talk about porn in any way, shape or form if it's related to somehow producing/viewing it and you should be safe

if gamefaqs.com was a porn site I could not say any of the following (according to the lead):
gamefaqs.com
gamefaqs
that faqs site or that game site
have an image/video with any of the above on it

and so on
but just don't mention porn in any way shape or form and you should be ok

If you linked to a twitter account that was pornographic you would also get in trouble.

What happens if you mention an account name that has explicit content? Whether you mention it knowingly or unknowingly?

I totally get the not linking directly to certain sites, but Twitter can be really explicit and the fact that it is fair game just seems odd.

you are literally two clicks away from porn anywhere on reddit. this rule (that isn't actually a rule, and you'd only know by seeing someone else complain about it) is completely fucking insane.

You can name drop Patreon, but you can't even abbreviate the other site, even though they are exactly the same service wise.

the simplification of the terms by sballen have made understanding what is or isn't acceptable a lot less clear.

the real rules are passed down through oral tradition now.

The codifiers of Roman law unpretentiously inserted a remarkable fragment of Greek jurisprudence in the first chapter of their collection. Among the laws which govern us, it says, some are written and others are not.

I actually had a mod say that naming a porn site "could land GFAQs in hot water legally".

These people are fucking delusional. I think its just newer mods that get that power rush and are itching to use the mod tools anyway they can.

Just to clarify this a little, because I agree the communication has been less clear than I think anyone would like.

You are not allowed to name pornsites by name. You can abbreviate if you want to discuss them (The Hub, PH, OF, XV, SB, The Bank, XH, The Hamster would all be acceptable abbreviations for a handful of common sites) and be fine.

As for what consistitues a pornsite, some are obvious (The Hub for instance). Others are a bit trickier but can ultimately boil down to "Is the site predominantly an adult content site?" This is why Patreon is okay and OF is not, despite being similar services. For better or worse, OF is used primarily for adult content and is primarily known for adult content. There might be a day where OF's user base offers a diverse enough offering where we would reconsider this distinction, but that isn't now. And furthermore, I'm not sure I have seen OF discussion yet that wasn't about adult content creators. Again you are free to discuss, just please abbreviate appropriately.

Sites like Reddit and Twitter are mentionable because despite hosting adult material, they are not predominantly adult content sites. That being said, linking to adult content subreddits or Twitters will be treated the same as having linked to an adult content site.

You are allowed to mention the names of adult content creators and professionals so long as you don't link to any of their work.

And please know that the moderation team is aware this doesn't have ideal clarity just yet. We are working on ways to make it more clear going forward. Likewise our moderation directive is to educate not punish, so pornsite mentions will result in NKLs explaining the rules as opposed to harsher sentences.

I hope that helps.

If you abbreviate, sure. As you mentioned it no. Not only is it a direct name mention of a pornsite. It is a link to a pornsite.

That is the idea. We aren't moderating to punish but inform.

And again the mod team is working on ways to make this more clear to the userbase.

Tbh, today I made the mistake of spelling out OF and got modded for it (which I had no idea was an issue, but it was an NKL so whatever, I won't do that again). Meanwhile I've seen Duckbear have the full thing in the title of his topics dozens of times and *nothing* has ever happened to him. wtf, Gamefaqs?
