8 MB save file size is the max; anything over that and your saves get corrupted.

I don't know what the *starting* size is but my save files are around 2.6 MB

This is a response from a moderator on the CP2077 community forums:

Yes. Obviously there's an issue. What I'm saying is: it's something like this.

E.g. if the game was designed to be completed in 30-50 hours, and players don't complete the game, same difference. They play for 80+ hours, and/or also use skills that were never designed for endless grinding 10,000 times -- you may trigger something the engine isn't ready for.

So, we have two options:

1.) Avoid that issue, if we can, and try to figure out what's causing it. There's probably a way to work around or fix it, but it will likely take time.

2.) Repeatedly do the same things again and again and wind up with a whole folder full of corrupted saves that are not going to help anyone.

Everyone is welcome to choose either option...but either way the problem is still going to be there.

Now, if I were able to psychically know what's in the developers' heads, or use transcendent powers to look into the future for the ultimate resolution, I would happily do so and post the fix here. As it stands, I'm only a mortal. So, instead, I'll use my experience with a similar issue from the past, suggest what may work here, too, and hopefully save people some frustration.

If people are dissatisfied with that, they're welcome to ignore it. Got no idea what's happening for sure. Only what it sounds like.

Yeah that's really bad. And they haven't even committed to fixing it yet. They 'might' increase the file size sometime. That will no doubt change in their next official response given the press about it.

idk if I'd call myself a fanboy but it definitely makes me wonder if I should keep playing because I *am* collecting and recycling all the junk and I don't know if I'm going to put tens of hours into the game and then it's going to freeze up on me and that's it.

..I don't get what the issue is with that moderators post. They just seem to be saying that while the situation is sucky, doesn't change the reality that a too big save file will break so... don't make it too big until it's fixed?

@SquirtleSkwad Because the longer you play, the bigger your save file gets. It is inevitable that unless you "play the game they want you to" and limit how much time you play, you're going to get that file size limit and then you won't be able to continue your game.

I remember having to make sure every door and gate I passed in tes iv Oblivion was closed because apparently them being open would get saved into your file whereas being closed was the default so it didn't increase your file size. :l

Apparently stackable items like crafting components and food items are all counted as... individual, unique items so if you have 1200 "common components" it's treated as 1200 different items instead of just... 1 thing counted to 1200, and that's causing file sizes to go up too lol. But I guess clearing out inventory can help.

Yeah, this is why it stings, like they made this game that got everyone hyped as fuck, then all the let downs compounded on top of this, really makes the people who bought feel a certain type of way.

On PC thread someone said the default save file is 1 MB as a baseline reference.

Wonder how close my Witcher 3 file was to getting corrupted. Near the end, my biggest motivation not to die was the long load times. Selling loot to vendors didn't seem to remove the item from the world, which is, I assume, the reason it took longer and longer to load the more I played.

Tracking each item separately with an ID isn't a terrible idea... For an MMO or any kind of MP game. Maybe they pre-baked this in for their future MP plans? It helps track who has what, so you can avoid item duplication and the like. Though for a single player game, hell naw. Just store the item type and quantity man.

Also, for a save file to corrupt for being 'too big' just baffles me and I'm a software engineer. Like... Saving at the base level is serialising memory data to some kind of format that can be later loaded. I fail to see how file size has any impact on this unless they wrote some terribly terrible bespoke deserialization. 8mb isn't even that much, jesus. I wonder if it was just some dumb hard constraint they arbitrarily enforced.

So uh.

Today was my first time playing (PC) since 1.05 came out. First couple hours it ran fine, after that the frames started dropping, started getting visual artifacting, image on the holographic scope disappeared and made aiming impossible, smoke and fire effects were out of control - sometimes disappearing, sometimes flaring up as bright as the damned sun on my screen.

Temperatures were fine.

I've had longer play sessions in the past and also had spotty performance but not this extreme, I legit think they introduced or worsened a memory leak.

Am reading about 1.05 responses on the Steam and GOG forums, people are now complaining about frequent crashes they didn't have before, some people can't even start the game now. Don't see anything on the CDPR forums specifically, though.

But just wtf... At least I'm not the only one but how do they fuck it up worse -_-

Wasn't this an issue with Skyrim as well? Like if you used Conjure Bow and fired off arrows they never disappeared? Also if you so much as slighty moved an item out of place it could screw up your save eventually?

I think the save issue with Skyrim was specific to the PS3 version. Eventually it would save too much things for the system to handle.

Ok let's take a step back for a second.

What would you do?

You've got shareholders and investors demanding the game be released for the holidays.
You've got gamers demanding the game come out ASAP because it's been so long.

You know you shouldn't and can't delay it again without immense backlash.

Hindsight is 20/20, but reaction to another delay wouldn't be nearly as big as this. Unfortunately, given the pressure from parties and knowledge that the game wasn't ready, they had to.

They fucked up and got fucked. I'm not saying they're above blame, but one mistake shouldn't be reason to say fuck those thousands of people who have built plenty of clout with how good Witcher 3 is.
