What's the answer?

This is one of those questions that will stump a massive majority of people as no one will get or even understand but for those math geniuses, they can get the answer if you just use your mathematical skills..

This is a question from asia where someone was working in a math book and came across this very difficult question that has people stumped...but can you get the answer?

That IS tricky. The 8 in the third grid crushes the apparent pattern that would place 10 as the answer. If it's not a broken pattern with no solution, then my mathematical ability just isn't sharp enough to find it.

Wait. I think the guy who answered 15 is right. Rather than thinking of the grinds as connected strings, thinking of them as scales instead indicates balancing the top by the bottom. That is to say, when the bottom numbers are one more on the left, the top numbers are one more on the right. So, with the bottom right number of the third being 4 more than the left number, the missing number should be 4 more than the top right number.

I'm not gonna say it can't be solved but I don't see the pattern. The obvious pattern of the first two does not continue to the third so the pattern must be something else. I'll let someone smarter than me figure it out.

5

4 is 3 less than 7 and 5 is 1 less than 6

7 is 3 less than 10 and 8 is 1 less than 9

5 is 3 less than 8 and 11 is 1 less than 12

15. Columns add up. Also 5 cause the 1st and 2nd columns of each square have the same difference.

That was me. More went with my instinct on 15. Thought I saw a pattern.

The way to solve these is using simultaneous equations. I did a whole set like a year ago for one of my friends but I was super rusty even then.

What u say is true.

However the difference between column 1 and column two of the 1st 2 squares is 3 and 1 respectively. Thus to get the same difference in the third set the answer could be 5

I like the answer of 15.
That's the only reasonable pattern I could figure out with these numbers.

Actually the answer is still 15. Both patterns resulted in the same number.

There are at least two obvious patterns that result in 15 being the answer.

4+7 = 5+7
7+10 = 8+9
15+8 = 11+12

And
22, 34, 56 all fit the function 12n + 10

Anyways, there's not enough information to solve this problem, This is a great example of the shortcommings of common core. There are simply too many patterns and at least two different correct answers (5, 15).

Because 5 can be derived from the pattern:
13-9 = 4
19-15 = 4
20-16 = 4

Also this is what happens when you have a Software Engineer try and solve poorly designed grade school common core problems.

I still think that my 12n + 10 solution makes more sense than the adding columns solution, or the add and subtract solutions.

Isn't this just open to interpretation? I'd guess it could be five if we're going by the vertical pattern. Could be anything else.
