In the rest of the world the Democratic Party is seen as center-right economically and maybe center socially. For example, the conservative party in the UK does not find abortion remotely controversial, and thinks its abhorrent that the Republicans here would even attempt to restrict it. Another way of putting it is basically that Democrats/liberals believe in capitalism and imperialism, while leftists are strongly against those things.
