My mom is a burnt out liberal with the heart of a leftist. many of her generation understand the flaws in the system but see no way to fix them

Pretty much just because of tankies. I don't think they should be considered leftists but they have taken over so many leftists spaces and don't tolerate other opinions, so it's a real problem either way. I sympathize with the various forms of leftist anarchy, but I feel much more comfortable with social democrats than leftists in power because of the tankies.

I should add I trust and largely support the Japanese Communist Party though. The representative for my town is a member and they firmly reject violence, removal of rights, and were explicitly opposed to Soviet Union and oppose the PRC now. They are concerned with making things better for workers and the poor. I only disagree with them on a few things, but I think they would be a huge improvement over the current government or even better them in coalition with the Constitutional Democratic Party.

I understand this perspective, but at the same time, this seems like a fairly ignorant position historically. In the post-ww2 era where the cold war started ramping up, there were countries like Indonesia under Sukarno who weren't even communist, but merely unaligned third world nations with popular communist parties, and the result was that the United States backed fascist elements within the country with money, had them do false flag attacks and blame it on leftists, and then take over the government and completely purge anyone remotely left wing, either just kill them outright or send them to labor camps, and you can see this same strategy repeated over and over and over again in asia and south america. The lesson a lot of left wing leaders took from this was that they needed to have absolute support of the military and to completely shut out western influence in their country. There is a reason that they have so far failed to coup Maduro in Venezuela or failed so long at overthrowing Castro in Cuba, those guys got the support of the military so the US couldn't manage to overthrow them without a full on hot war. Social democracy is valid if you are a western european country aligned with the US backed influence, but it is a lot harder to pull it off for other parts of the world.

The Soviet Union was literally teaming up with the Nazis during World War II to expand their empire and you think it was a response to US policy during the Cold War? Just because the US is bad, doesn't mean other imperialist powers are good. Tankies have been imperialist authoritarians from the start. Both USSR and the PRC explicitly cracked down on worker's organizations and reduced their rights. Both used state capitalism with a vague promise of socialism in the future maybe. If you want to talk history you should be firmly rejecting the tankie ideology because it is only concerned with power and uses leftist rhetoric as a vehicle to obtain power.

For sure the US co-opts and dismantles anything it cant outright dominate or leverage political/economic influence over. Terrible things have been done in the name of preseving us global hegemony

Yes most middle countries were forced to pick an imperial power. I would never defend imperial powers interfering with other countries self-determination, so definitely not what I wanted to suggest. It's especially jarring when the US did everything it could to keep the Communist Party out of power in Vietnam and now less than 50 years later they are effectively allies.

Yes tankies defend the USSR being allied with Hitler. Am I supposed to be impressed or convinced? It only makes me respect them even less that they are incapable of saying something is bad and feel they need to defend genocide, imperialism, and removal of rights for the sake of state capitalism. Unlike tankies I have been to the Eastern European countries occupied by the Soviet empire. Memorials to workers murdered for striking, a hallmark of communism according to tankies (it was a Western backed to coup to want higher wages and reasonable hours!).

The guy is literally a tankie and you posted a YouTube video as an argument. I can find YouTube videos of Trumpers defending his dumb shit and neo-Nazis defending Hitler's evils as well. Finding a YouTube video of a supporter defending the regime they support is not impressive or convincing. I can read plenty of accounts of what happened on Wikipedia or other sites that cite information. You will of course claim the cited information is biased and part of a vast conspiracy much like Trumpers and Neo-Nazis do. But yeah tankies are totally leftists which is why they love capitalism so much ("you can't just press the full communism button!"), and defend regimes with massive wealth inequality where forming workers' unions and striking are illegal. i'm a realist. neither side cares about the country. there are so many distractions and spins to posture to to keep up the cults of personality. this fake "war" between parties and constant bickering is exactly what our government banks on so we never ask why meaningful change won't ever actually occur.

the response to covid and the absolutely paltry amount of money they can't even promise us while covering multi-million dollar bailouts for big businesses should speak loudly to people, but instead they flip shit about having to wear masks when they go into consumer mode... perfect distraction
