Do they simply not get involved until the site contacts them, and even then the site is unlikely to contact the police who can arrest the fraudster and would be more likely to sue/ban the troublesome user?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ebay/comments/ahi9pp/received_fake_item_from_seller_ebay_is_requiring/ this comment: This has happened to me before when a seller sent me a rock instead of the item and it was a nightmare. Spent 3 hours at a police station and they were literally laughing. The police do not want to deal with ebay stuff, it's a joke to them.

I imagine it depends on different jurisdictions. If you live in california and got scammed by a guy in london the cali police will laugh ala the reddit guy.

This is usually a 7th Amendment issue, if eBay or Amazon don't do anything about it for some reason.

Honestlyi have no idea how these things work. Its probably why ebay has an insurance policy if yoi get scammed. Evay back in the 90s was terrible. They still arent perfect but compared to what it was its much better.

This is why I don't use ebay.

Amazon has good customer service in general. Every time I've complained about anything I just get my money back immediately.

ebay fixes this most times. but if you have to go to the police, you have to go through the one where the scammer lives. and, while they shouldn't ever laugh at you, it's going to be low priority until the values get really high.

I've had friends tell the cops where to find their stolen **** and they claim they can't do anything. I know a guy who got arrested for stealing his own guitar back.

I have no idea but earlier this year my ebay account or PayPal account got hacked and someone made eBay purchases. I told the bank and the local police, though the purchases were delivered to another state

Never heard back from the cops. But the bank refunded my money. If they caught the person I was never told

I actually have their address or at least where they had the items sent

Im asking so I can learn more about how do police operate, as people often act like committing fraud ONCE means the cops will be on your tail

We have the Office of Consumer Protection in the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to deal with fraud. Tons of people call the office saying they want to talk to the Attorney General, then get pissy when told to call the DCCA since they handle fraud <_<

It's not a police thing, at least not here in Hawaii.

The between the lines I got from the last topic he made about this is that he shipped (or ordered) something without a tracking number on eBay because "tracking is too expensive" or some other nonsense like that. The item was either not received or was received but falsely reported as not received.

I used to ask how do disputes work when there is no tracking on reddit, and I asked so frequently that everyone thought I was going to do it, when all I was doing was asking for general inquiry and I havent scammed any seller on any site.

If people just told me I was being suspicious, I wouldnt have asked so much. But someone gave me all the info so I no longer ask how do disputes work.

But an USA cop told me they dont give a shit about fraud on Amazon or eBay until the site contacts them so I wanted to make sure its the same for every country

If you're worried that a ebay/amazon seller sticking you with a "buyers false claim" will have the police after you, I don't think they usually involve police. They usually work through ebay/amazon policy.

Filing a report to police may be the worst thing a seller can do if a buyer buys their item and the buyer scams the money back. (If that's what reddit said?)

If you filed a buyer claim and it was legit then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

i always file legit claims but people said that due to this post I made, the police would be suspicious of me (when in reality, I was asking for inquiries on how do disputes work even though I did make it sound like I would file a false dispute) https://snew.notabug.io/r/Ebay/comments/ffuazp/would_ebay_side_with_the_buyer_100_of_the_time/
