Seems like a common reason that ensnares people in cults and the like; a desire to belong, in the West's deeply isolated way of life.

This problem is all but eliminated in the far east's more collectivist culture, and heck almost doesn't exist in regions where a dominant religion reigns supreme and forces all to obey.

I don't think so, but I guess it depends on what you mean by a cult. I feel like you're defining it in a way that bakes the conclusion into the premise.
