There's so much about NXIVM that still baffles me, I just don't understand how fairly successful actresses like Allison Mack and Nicki Clyne could get drawn into something so obviously wrong. There really doesn't appear to be anything particularly special about this Keith Raniere guy either.
Same obviously applies to Scientology, we all know that it's a horrible scam but it manages to pick up new members. I'm not religious in any way, I don't know religious pedagogy works and how it's applied to this scams. I don't know if I should just let my bafflement sit and not go down a cult rabbit hole, that might be how they get you. --- . ... Copied to Clipboard!

However, Kristin Kreuk did not take a slave, so she was not arrested More importantly, she got out years ago despite iirc being the one who got Mack involved. TheAwesomeMatt posted... There really doesn't appear to be anything particularly special about this Keith Raniere guy either. The same thing could be said about government, though. There's a lot of shit about government that makes no fucking sense either if you stop to think about it too long, *especially* democracies since the operating theory is that people can't be trusted to handle their own shit yet you're going to those same people decide how shit should be handled. I think a lot of it just comes down to the appearance of structure and authority which makes crazy shit feel more justified. Ask somebody to do something crazy and a normal person is going to refuse. Put on a lab coat or an uniform then ask somebody to do something crazy, normal people are going to listen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment A lot of it is probably evolutionary, where humans -- as a social animal -- likely seek structure and authority, whether that authority is a cult leader, a politician, or a religious figure. Of course, in NXVIM's case, there was a whole structure for grooming people into the thing involving blackmail so it's not just a matter of people going along with it as it is a matter of people being progressively victimized. And then eventually some of the exploited became exploiters as well. --- (\/)(\/)|-| There are precious few at ease / With moral ambiguities / So we act as though they don't exist. ... In the documentary The Vow they show Mack's first face to face meeting with Raniere and you could see that she was really vulnerable for whatever reason, like she wasn't in a good place personally. You can see him already taking full advantage of that right from the start. Still, despite being a victim she did terrible things too. I don't think she'll get anywhere near 40 years but double digits is a possibility if their bankroller got 6. Then again, that woman showed no remorse whatsoever so who knows.

Been a couple years and I still get migraines trying to process all this. About a decade ago there were posts about how Allison Mack had joined a weird cult and there were actual jokes about it.
Fast forward what, 7-8 years and it's a full blown arrest for being in said sex cult. And to find out it was KK who introduced her to it in the first place, but then she got out, and Allison Mack didn't... Every facet of this boggles the mind. I can't even process how an actress, the actress from that smallville show, got wrapped up in all this. I can't even. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
