Why am I eating sawdust?

Well, I'm not... technically. I'm eating discount Parmesan... but the first ingredient is 'cellulose derived from wood pulp'

Which means there's more cellulose than Parmesan... so ya, it's sawdust.

Which, honestly - while it's kinda bad I could get used to it, but they charge like it's almost Parmesan - it's not that much cheaper, only a little cheaper. They should just sell the dang sawdust with some cheese flavoured seasoning salt in it like you can get at movie theatres and it'd probably go over well.

It's more akin to uncompressed paper than sawdust, really.

At a lot of markets or delis you can save some money by just buying it by the chunk or by the wedge and grating it yourself

often you can get an even better deal by purchasing pieces of the rind parm. Theyre harder and drier than a typical chunk of the cheese but it grates just fine and is still flavorful

Generally speaking, if you're comparing it to "parmesan cheese product," you're still going to be paying more per unit for actual permigiano reggiano, regardless of the purchase form. It'll be cheaper and keep better if you buy it whole and grate it yourself, but "parmesan" is a very cheap knock-off.

per unit sure, but Id much rather pay 3 bucks for a little chunk of the good stuff than a canister of the pre-grated cheese
