I think streaming services for gaming are more likely, and even that is several years from being mainstream. All digital gaming was a thing all the way back in the mid-90's, and it is only just starting to become the main way to play games. Streaming services are only a few years old at this point, so I don't expect them to take over digital for another 10-20 years at least.
And yea, once everything is streaming then hardware won't be as important since you would get the same gaming experience on a phone hooked up to your TV that you would on your high-end gaming PC. --- I am a Contract Software Developer. If they also exchange your hardware if it gets damaged or becomes obsolete, then maybe.
