It keeps like freezing for a minute at times. I did a scan and for some reason it found some trojans in FFVIII on steam for some reason and I haven't played it for years.

Any good tools I could use to find shit?

But the RAM I downloaded from Bearshare shouldn't make my PC not freeze like this.

I saw no spikes on anything in Taskmaster when I looked. My Firefox drains a lot of memory but it's never above 60% in total anyway.

download even moar ram. eventually you will have more ram than virus and the ram will ignore them

but forreal download malwarebytes, dc from internet, run a scan, reboot, scan again and quarrantine the items. otherwise u can reformat the hard drive completely.

Nah temp is at 35C when using basic stuff, goes to 45-50C when I do heavy CPU stuff.
I think I disabled all those memory hogs except Firefox.

Ok. Define freezing exactly.

What stops responding? Everything, mouse and keyboard included? If you have something playing on your monitor, a game or a video, or audio, do those freeze too? Does your monitor black out at all?

Usually what happens is whatever I'm doing stops responding, be it the game or just browser, when I play Griftlands the music starts to lag/loop or stop (music stopped once in RoR2 as well). Sometimes that's all that happens, but more often PC freezes, I can't move mouse or anything. But if I have youtube video on when it happens the video keeps going with the sound, then after a minute all my actions I did catch up.

Also a disk being at 100% wit 0 write and read a second is dodgy looking to the max. What kinda drive is it?

I'm betting it's a spinning disk, and Windows Search Indexer was probably banging away at it.

Your games would be better off on your SSD. I'm not sure what programmes you'd have on SSD to justify putting the games on the HDD, the OS makes sense but most other programmes have no need to have such high speed access..

Hmm. Audio works outside of games, and when things lock up outside of games monitor and audio feeds continue, but input hangs for a while and then catches up.

It could be the search indexer. It could also be a lot of other things.

How open are you to backing up things you want to keep a hold of and doing a fresh, clean install of Windows?

Display driver crashing, possibly. Do this:
  1. Open the start menu and type "Event Viewer", then press Enter
  2. On the left, expand Custom Views, then click on "Administrative Events"
  3. In the list of events, look for ones that read "Error" or "Critical" under Level and are timestamped around the time the hangs are happening.
  4. If you find some, click on them and copy & paste what is in the details box under the Events list.

Honestly, I think it's the D: Drive.

It sounds like I/O hang ups.

Now WHY the D: drive is doing that? No idea. What brand and age is it? There's a chance it's just dying.

Or there's a chance the read/write being slow is Windows fault somewhere.

How much free space is on your C: Drive? Do you know if your pagefile is on C: or D:? (if you never changed pagefile settings, it'll be C).

Seagate Barracuda 2TB from 2014.

My C is just 250GB SSD from the same year. Dont have much room left in it atm.

I dont think I ever had change pagefile, I dont even know what it is.

I have a sprare HDD with 1 TB. Maybe I should hook it up and transfer my stuff to it. Thing is I have desktop on D. I thought I had it on C. Is that hard to change?

And is there a way to save data on the HDD before it breaks totally? It's doing the 100% thing more often, it's dying

But why would it be dying? 6 year old HDD isn't too bad right? But it's been used a lot, like I have Plex server on it and I watch lot of stuff through Plex, could that have damaged it?

According to the only study I could find on hard drive life spans, 6 years is fairly pretty old for them. They're study only goes for 4 years, but they think by year 6 half of all hard drives will have died. Of course they are a data backup provider so it's in their interest to make people think their data is more at risk then it is:

Hard drives are weird. It entirely depends on the kind of read/writing it had over its life time - which is pretty impossible to tell. Plus, they can get issues which slowly degrade it's health. Like imagine it was slightly offset, every time the arm seeks, it slightly scratches the surface of the disk. Over time, it destroys more and more of the hard drive before rendering the whole thing unusable.

That's just one example too. They can die. Sometimes its physical, sometimes it's the controllers, etc, etc. HDDs have a lot of moving parts and in engineering, they often say, the more moving parts, the more things can go wrong. You could slightly drop it, bang it, knock it, etc. and it'll break it. You shouldn't move them whilst they're on either. SSDs you can move fine.

When you said your "desktop is on D" do you mean your Windows install is? I would definitely look at installing Windows to a fresh SSD and backing up any important data. Your page file (the thing I mentioned earlier) will be on D if Windows is. The Page File is written/read a lot constantly by Windows, if there are any delays in reading/writing it, you'll get a total computer hang.

No. Windows is on C. But I dont remember why my desktop is on D. Like when it didnt find D I had no desktop, no icons etc. Could still use things like Firefox which was open.
