They actually are pokemon from the future when people have all become pokemon. Its how you can catch Brock and Misty

The way I heard it as a kid was that you had to catch them in alphabetical order to get Celebi.

It didn't work.

People say Pokemon ran out of ideas in later gens, but gen 2 literally had Pokemon based on hieroglyphics.

honestly I appreciate it when Pokemon decides to eschew typical combat pragmatism and just makes something weird for the sake of lore. Id have even forgiven Regigigass bullshit ability if you didnt need the movie version to unlock the other Regis. >_>

when I was a kid I though Unown were cool. I never hoped to use on in battle, but they helped add this feeling of ancient mystery to Johto.

I agree, but the fact that they don't do anything with the unknown is kinda disappointing.

I haven't heard any cool theories about them like the truck in RBY or lavender town or the lab or any other cool gen 1 theories
