I wasn't even thinking of that series. (I need to watch it.) Is there a wrong way to be introduced to chess though? I started learning chess about six years ago because I didn't like what video games were offering at the time. I would watch game breakdowns daily and still do. I think it's cool that popular streamers with average ability get featured online and have tournaments with IMs and GMs commenting. If that gets other people interested, it's a good thing, and will bring more eyes to serious players too.

Making fun of someone for finding interest in a hobby for whatever reason. Not only is it trying to make them reconsider their interests.

Its just plain stupid. What self respecting fan would actually want less people interested in their hobby?

You dont want them mucking it up with their newly found bright eyed optimism. Or anyone to approach your hobby with a different view or mindset?

How about you actually celebrate having more opponents for your games. And if you REALLY wanted to force them out. You could attempt to beat them on the 8x8 and crush their hopes of learning a new hobby cus they watched a show on Netflix

Assuming that you could both win AND crush their spirits forever.

I always want to get into chess. I recently really got back into it, but man, now everyone is going to accuse me of only hopping on the bandwagon because of the Queen's Gambit when I haven't even watched it.

Chess is cool, though, and the more players that get interested, the better it's gotta be for theory.

this interview was done immediately after he lost to a woman in a competition

Queen's Gambit on Netflix. It's caused a very dramatic upturn in interest behind the game. Chess board sales have gone up over 300% or something like that.

I noticed it before the series, when chess.com began hosting tournaments featuring popular twitch streamers who weren't good chess players. I saw some push back against average skilled players getting so much attention.

The "Great" Bobby Fischer was one of them and he said similar things. Of course, he had a lot of issues.

Also, this is the first book I have been extensively using to improve my tactics. Considering we all probably suck just enough to the point where we or our opponents will generally fail to take advantage of any sort of gains the Opening would provide us, this is a great list of subjects to go over to improve your middle game where a lot of the magic will happen for us new folks:

It is all free, which is the best part!!! I bought this $64 dollar beginner course like two days ago, and I'm not going to lie, after looking what it will cover (basic openings, some middle-game stuff, and basic endgames), I feel extremely ripped off compared to Predator at the Chessboard. I guess I am hoping the annotations will help me out with the other one, but as I said, for most of us, openings don't matter nearly as much as the middle-game since we all are blundering machines anyways, but at least recognizing a tactic or getting mate patterns in our head will help us ultimately win games, you know.
