like rather than intervene or even have an opinion at all they'll enable untold amounts of toxicity around them as long as it's not in their face or affecting them directly, and any attempt by someone else at addressing it is treated as far more disruptive and unwelcome

i made almost this exact topic a week ago because honestly i didn't get any good answers as to why a lot of people are like this, particularly in nerd circles

Some people just want to live a quiet life even if they get challenged, and will only get involved if their hand is forced.

You know, I remember this one anime character. He was the villain. He lived in a good part of town and followed a set schedule for when he'd get home and get to bed by. He was healthy at his last checkup and didn't smoke but would occasionally would drink. He'd do some exercise and drink a glass of milk and sleep peacefully every night. All he wanted to do was live a quiet life, free of any problems like enemies or winning or losing. But if he were to fight, he wouldn't lose.

Sometimes conflict is just boring and a nuisance. I imagine people who want to avoid conflict find it boring and a nuisance all the time. Or maybe prior life experience has taught them that conflict is not something they can win.
