A black-and-white film about a 1940s film writer isn't popular among audiences, regardless of its quality? Say it isn't so.

I love Citizen Kane, and it looks interesting, but prestige cinema hardly ever has major, widespread appeal.

Yeah remove all superhero movies and the blockbusters you don't like from your argument and tell me if it's still true about the industry making the most money

If you just watch/read/do whatever is most advertised to you then I don't think you are actually drawn to it, you're just more or less being peer pressured into it.

Plus, seeking out things that are not popular and finding genuine enjoyment out of them and rejecting milquetoast popular stuff is a verifiable cool personality trait.

Actually it's called being a smug elitist when you do that

The movies in the list have the most broad appeal. That's about it.

Those people might and likely do watch other stuff...but it's all spread about and doesn't hit the top ten.

What do you think should be watched instead?

It'd be cool if there were like 2 or 3 grownup movies instead of lowest common denominator/VOD stuff. Doesn't even necessarily have to be good, just give the impression that an effort is being made.

you don't come off as much of a cinephile given that you watch like 70% VOD poopoo for your website. you also use a movie *and* a film rating, which makes no sense.

tbh you could stand to watch and review something outside of the modern purview. it'd probably help your perspective as a critic and also you'd get to watch better movies. i mean is the american pie sequel really gonna get *that many* more clicks than a review of, i dunno, an american in paris or il posto or any other number canonical or under the radar older movies.

the publicist didnt even reach out to him (it's mentioned in his review he had to request a screener link himself). it has ten RT reviews after two months. two are from major outlets and the others are indie blogs. no one cares about this movie in the slightest. meanwhile film twitter is a large body of people who would definitely be more inclined to click on his review tweet of, i don't know, drive a crooked road, instead of that. like cmon. everyone knows what to expect from a DTV american pie spinoff but... what do you expect from a noir starring mickey rooney? i have no idea. plus it's probably a better movie, which doesn't hurt.

First of all, I choose to watch most of those movies. And some of them end up being decent or good. Shithouse for example is one of the best movies I've seen this year. Same goes for black bear.

Steven Spielberg himself made the distinction between movie and film, but it wouldn't surprise me if your narcissism believes you to be above Spielberg. Even so, that grading scale is not my choice but I see how it's helpful to the average reader. People should always just read the review anyway

You do make a point that critics should always be going back into the vault and watching classics to hone their knowledge and understanding of the craft. But here's the thing. I don't log that stuff on my letterboxd. I only log the stuff I'm watching for review. As for clicks, for what it's worth Stardust actually made me the most money last month. Still not sure how it went viral but yeah

Google isn't bringing up anything about Spielberg noting a difference between the two. Perhaps you could elucidate.

Why don't you log them? Or review them for the site? What have you seen/enjoyed this year?

This is not true. I didn't even know the movie existed until the publicist reached out to me. But I still had to request the movie for access. The movie itself didn't land in my emails, I was asked if I wanted to review it before knowing the movie existed. And yes it did pretty well in views actually because not a lot of other people reviewed it.

While you're over there watching the Kraft Mac and Cheese of movies like Little Nicky and Captain Underpants, we cultured people are watching the foie gras(minus the animal cruelty) of movies, MANK. And the best part is. We're paying the same price!
