Jabba's abode. Then he proceeds to choke the crime lord's guards using the Force. My question is: How did he learn how to do that? His father sure could not have taught him the technique. I mean, unless the former used it during their duel in the previous movie, and the latter learned it just by watching him like some sort of Japanese cartoon. And it is not likely that Yoda, a master of the Light side of the Force, could have (or would have) taught him such a technique. So where and when did Luke learn how to Force-choke people? Additionally, how did Anakin learn how to choke people telekinetically? He already knew how to do that before he pledged his loyalty to Palpatine.

I must have these answers.

He learned that technique by studying the maclunky method in one of the Jedi texts Yoda had on Dagobah

It's literally no different than other applications of the force. If you can use the force to move giant objects, you don't need to specifically learn how to apply it to other uses. And he had already demonstrated precision in countless other scenes, including the training montage. (And that's excluding the fact he was able to use it to retrieve his lightsaber in the wampa cave with almost no training.)

By this point Luke has lifted his star fighter with the force. I imaging choking someone is like picking up and moving any other object with the force.

Oh, so it's not really so much a sinister Sith technique, but just a variant of telekinetically grabbing objects, then. That makes it seem a bit underwhelming.

Maybe in the expanded universe or the games there are specific techniques for either side. I think in the original trilogy they just had magic powers and what set them apart was how they chose to use them.

Usually only the implication that healing has more good applications than being able to fry people with lightning does.

The movies tend to hammer really hard on what is good, neutral or evil. It was Kyle Katarn I think in the old EU who mainly introduced the concept of the intent mattering, not the defined boundaries of good and evil.

idk, force lightning seems very specific in the films, although technically it's made famous by one user who likely taught it to his proteges.

A lot of the EU treats it like it's its own separate and distinct power, but that always struck me as bizarre. If you can telekinetically hurl big hunks of metal around, why could you not use the exact same power to force a windpipe closed?

I heard it was the same way that he learned how to make a new lightsaber. He stayed in Obi-Wans old house and learned from Bens old papers and the guy himself.

For those who didn't watch, what Luke does and details involved indicate it was a mind trick and not a choke. For example Force Choke is always accompanied by a specific sound effect that wasn't present during the scene in question.

Video games tend to depict the force as being essentially a list of magic spells, but that's not consistent with how the force is otherwise represented. It's an energy field created by living beings that can be manipulated.
