I could understand if they at least changed the Pokedex entry, but nope. entry specifically mentions poison sweat.

Hell you've made Eevee into a mascot Pokemon, how do you let its evolution lore slip like that?

Umbreon was a Poison-type in the GS beta, they seemingly just didn't bother changing the dex entry after introducing the Dark type. Or in any game afterward

Another example is Ledian which had five stars on its back in the beta and is still called the Five Star Pokmon with its dex entries clearly referencing these stars despite the fact that it has never canonically had stars on its back

They edit the Pokedex entries almost every generation though.

no they don't. they generally have an entry for each version of the game the pokemon was introduced in, and then the other generations just rephrase and fuse these entries. They edit them, but in a way that takes zero original thought... and considering how dumb so many of the pokedex entries are, I don't think the dissonance between the entry stating Umbreon could use poison and him not being able to learn any poison moves was anywhere near their top five hundred priorities

Weather teams at least have thought put into them. I still have nightmares about a stall Umbreon in showdown that LITERALLY COULD NOT KILL ME and wasted 100 turns doing nothing but making himself impossible to kill

In Liquid Crystal they programmed one of your rivals to have a stall Umbreon and boy oh boy is that fun

Weather teams also had room for creativity. I still remember someone using a gen 4 sandstorm team that had a specs Sceptile on it.

looking at Bulbapedia, they just verbatim copied Umbreons entries from Sun for Sword and from Crystal for Shield

Espeons entries are copied from Silver and Moon. I assume they similarly copied random old entries for other returning Pokemon.

Picked Nirdoran male at random because this is the first returning Pokemon I had in mind
"Small but brave, this Pokmon will hold its ground and even risk its life in battle to protect the female it's friendly with."
This never appeared in any dex entry before

Also, all the fossils, like Omanyte
"Because some Omanyte manage to escape after being restored or are released into the wild by people, this species is becoming a problem."

I really like the new dex entries, they expand on the biology of old Pokemon we already knew sometimes. It's cool.

Are those species native to the game? Because I thought the pattern was that species you can catch in that region get new entries while stuff you have to transfer from older games get reused entries.

In SWSH you can't carry over Pokemon that are not native to the game, so they don't even have a entry...
There are few special cases that you can carry over but they also don't have a Pokedex entry

Looks like both of these are from DLC, so maybe they gave all the DLC ones new entries but not necessarily the base game ones?

Im not going to go through and check all of them, but after checking some it looks like base game gen 3 and earlier get old entries, gen 4 and newer get new entries.

I think the heavy restriction on toxic (to almost exclusively poison types) is warranted. Toxic umbreon isn't really what it's used for (if it's used at all) anymore, anyway - in VGC it's basically a foul play/snarlbot and I'm not sure it sees any use in singles?
