Talk or mumble/grunt?

I do enjoy the charm of the mumble era.

Definitely no-voice. The first one I played with voice acting was Incredibles and I was immediately like "wtf is this shit??"

That being said, although I haven't played it, I think I'd prefer something like LEGO City Undercover that isn't based on a licensed IP to have voice acting.

The voiced adaptation games are let down by voice acting because they try to stick to the real dialogue (and IIRC, lift audio from the films?), which restricts the jokes they can do.

The ones where they adapt film plots through the art of Lego Mime are good, as are the games where they tell original stories with voice acting. And yes, Lego City Undercover is hilarious.

Star Wars was definitely funnier due to the limitation of not having voices.

I remember Lego Jurassic World used voice clips that sounded like it was from a 180p Youtube video upload that was then filmed on a camcorder from the 90s and that was some right crap.

If it's recreating a licensed story, no voices

If it's an original story, voices

The voice acting from Lego Island still cracks me up to this day

I was fine with no voices until I saw the Lego Movie.

LEGO Island is a treasure and I really wish it were more easily playable on modern computers

Steam needs to get on that.

Or better yet, just port it to consoles.

Really enjoyed the lack of voices in Lego Star Wars, but Lego LotR has amazing lines so it's hard to not love it

I didn't even know they started adding voices. I've only played Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Yeah LotR was the first one I played with voices and going into it I didn't know they would have them and was a little skeptical it would work. Glad they added them for that one.

And yeah original stories without voices (I'm thinking Lego Batman 1 here) just don't work. The mumbly mimes only work when we already know the whole story by heart. They didn't do a good job telling original stories with it.

This sounds like the winner to me. The Lego Batman movie and games like that worked great with the voice acting, but the old school ones I played like the first Star Wars one, a lot of the charm was "The scenes you remember but sillier because it's Lego"- if they had to use clips and keep it less silly that sounds like a flaw.
