No idea why the Xbox Series X version has the most reviews, though.

It's alright, from the 4 hours I've played so far. I'd probably put it on the same level as Days Gone in terms of open world games, in that it's decent, but you wouldn't be missing a lot if you skipped it either.

Also, it HEAVILY borrows from Breath of the Wild in terms of structure. To the point that the starting area can only be left once you've completed your wings (glider), the story revolves around a great evil sealed away thousands of years ago underneath a mountain in the centre of the map and you have to awaken the four heroes in each corner of the map who were defeated previously (which you can do in any order, of course). Also the whole 'climb everything' mechanic, with a stamina bar that you increases by doing trials dotted around the map, which include combat and physics puzzles, as well as a few other things.

Voice acting and humour is a bit hit or miss, though I am generally enjoying the narrative style of Zeus and Prometheus making up stuff as they go and arguing about what's happening. Also a butt load of microtransactions, as per usual Ubisoft, but they're all cosmetic and the game has daily challenges to earn more. Also, annoyingly, I thought the armour you got for completing the Stadia demo looked kinda cool, so I quickly completed that last night too to unlock it.

So this one should go down in price pretty quickly, do you think? I'm busy with another Ubi game, and I'll probably want a break from them once I've finished.

They do give you a white costume with a hood when you do a daily challenge, but I don't think it's enough to be an AC reference, unfortunately. I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah, for sure, I just didn't think they were going to be so blatant about it for so much of the game's structure.

Well we might be in for a wave of BOTW-likes in the same way that Soulslikes and Battle Royales became a trend. Genshin Impact is already out there too.

I played a few hours of this.

So let me preface by saying I thought that Breath of the Wild was okay, and I had a lot of problems with it, and it's one of my least favorite Zelda games.

With that out of the way, it took everything I didn't like in BOTW and removed it. This gave is brimming with personality and every area has so much interesting stuff in it. The world is massive, the exploration is tons of fun. I like that far more than I ever liked BOTW's world. You can do something similar to Zelda where you mark your map, but instead it marks specific items (chests, Ambrose, cooking pots, etc.), but you can add a pin as well.

It also has characters who have personality. It's legitimately exciting to get into cutscenes and dialogue and listening to people. It's fun. They're funny. Zeus, in particular, is made the butt of so many jokes for being such an asshole in mythology. It's got so much charm packed into this game and I love it.

The combat is far more dynamic than BOTW ever was as well. It's not incredibly complex or anything, but I really, really enjoy what it gives us and I haven't even unlocked the rest of the combat stuff to really see how it all comes together.

Crafting and materials is so much simpler and it's not just throwing a bunch of shit into a pot. It's so much more streamlined and I understand people might prefer BOTW's way of doing it, but I love that it's just easy.

Overall, I'm enjoying this game so much more than BOTW already and I have barely even cracked the surface. This game is great and if you liked BOTW you'll probably like this. And if you had issues with BOTW or want to try a game like it that probably fixes all your issues with it, you'll really like it.

we'll have to agree to disagree here. not my cup of tea. again, it's like dreamworks versus pixar. sure it's got personality but it's a very non-subtle form of it

It's interesting, because I loved BotW, but after ten hours, I still only think this is just alright.

I disagree that the world is interesting. Colourful, certainly, but the world map just feels like a collection of landmarks dotted around with the gaps inbetween filled randomly with standard collect-a-thons and tasks. And the navigation is too convenient too quickly. I've barely cleared one region and I already have a pegasus which I can summon instantly, a dash boost which lasts for ages and a dozen stamina potions to hand and since you can mark locations from a great distance, I can just fast travel as near as possible, then travel in a straight line towards it. As I said, convenient, but I don't really feeel a sense of exploration. It's more like I'm just working down a list of objectives.

I also disagree that the combat is more dynamic. For a start, you only have one moveset and your combos are either 'Weak x 5' or 'Strong x 5'. I mean, it's fine, but BotW had unique mechanics for certain enemies, like shooting the Hinox in the eye or riding on the Lynels back or stealing the skulls of Stals, etc. Every enemy so far is just 'hit them until they die or their stun bar fills up, then hit them until they die'. And your Sheikah Slate gave you tools to assist in fighting, like using the ice block to get higher or magnesis to grab an enemy's weapon or throw boxes and stuff around. The only comparable thing is that your gauntlets let you throw rocks and trees. Plus the dodge into Flurry Rush felt so good, but getting a perfect dodge in this just affords you enough slowdown to get in maybe an extra hit? At least your weapons don't break, I suppose.

I was super disappointed too, as I did my first vault last night (the equivalent of the Divine Beast dungeons in BotW) and the puzzles and stuff were neat, but the boss was just a more powerful version of a regular enemy that summons mobs. Like, BotW sucked for bosses, but it still had unique ones for its main dungeons at least.

The side quests have been terrible so far. I did one where literally Zeus and Prometheus said a few lines, I shot an arrow at a stationary target, they said another couple of lines and the quest ended with no reward.

As for the voice acting, I like Zeus and Prometheus's banter, but it's not great quality. Hermes too. The writing is mostly fine, but the delivery is off. I'm guessing they had to record most of it in isolation and couldn't bounce off each other's performances, but eh. I'm also struggling to find a motivation to care about saving the gods either, since all the jokes revolve around how awful all of them are. Fenyx is a delight though. Their animations are great and I enjoy the greek mythology superfan aspect of their personality.

I do like the puzzles a lot though, they've been great fun (although a couple could have done with being signposted a bit better) and I like how they've handled new equipment, with you being able to equip whatever you think looks cool and it not affecting your stats. I maintain that the game is good fun, but I'm just not feeling a strong desire to finish this one yet. Maybe that'll change, but I think I'm gonna go back and finish Miles Morales and Yakuza before I put much more time into this one.
