What's the driving factor?

I've had 3 cats. Every dog I've had in my life was someone else's dog and thus came named.

Of the cats, two were named Oliver (Orange cats, named after the Didney movie) and one was named Sugar (Calico, 11 year old me thought process was she has white sugar, brown sugar, and burnt sugar)

Sadly neither is still with us but both lived into their double digits so they had long lives

My cat's name is Samus. She did a literal wall jump the day we brought her home.

He is a grumpy dog with a moustache so we have him an old man name

When I was born we had two cats. T.T. (not sure what it stood for, he was a short hair, grey I think), and Coffee (a ginger tabby, my dad nicknamed him Pudd).

We later took in a black stray and named it Bacardi. It often scratched me and ran away after a few weeks.

I guess I wasn't very observant of my pets at a young age. I know when we left Coffee was gone, and TT came with us. I want to say TT was run over some time after that but I'm not sure.

A family friend later gave me a kitten which was originally meant for my aunt, but they moved into another apartment and couldn't have pets. She was what we called a Heinz 57 breed, but I guess she looked close to a siamese. We named her B.B. or Bonnie's Baby after my aunt. Later got another stray I named Zipped. BB had kittens. I remember one was named Patches because of his black spots. Another I think I named Rollie. Two were given away and the others went to a pet store.

When we moved again we got our first dog. A shepherd cross we named Rico. We later got a golden lab/retriever cross and named him Max.

Other cats included Pookie, Sugar, Sylvester (as he looked the part). As for dogs, Indiana Bones (Indy for short), and Frankie.

and my sister has a pitbull cross named Violet.

My Pug is a rescue named Gizmo, and we had a big orange dog named Snowball when I was a kid. No idea how the latter was named.

First cat was named Chowder, which I think I got from Rugrats. Second cat was named Murray by my dad, for Bill Murray. Third cat I named Kammy in honor of a friend.

It's all over the place. Named some after colors in Japanese, some after Knights of the Round Table, some after what they look like, some after game characters

It's really just whatever I feel like at the time

my dog and previous cats name was the same (both adopted).

cat was free (relative had to move, offered the cat a home)
dog was free (another relative couldn't care for it, currently is living) she's 9 years old. after january she'll be at the average lifespan of the breed.

if anyone asks. it's a pitbull/hound mix.

my last dog, Brandon, was named by the shelter and i didn't bother to change it. not sure why.

my current dog, Omar, was named after Omar Little from The Wire. i was debating between a reference to my favorite band, The Grateful Dead, or a reference to my favorite piece of fiction, The Wire. i made a list of like five possibilities and mulled it over for a few days before and after bringing him home. i had it narrowed down to 'Jerry' and 'Omar' and in the end he felt more like an 'Omar' than a 'Jerry' so here we ware.

I name cats with names that start with the letter O. Usually a random noun. I had a cat with beautiful blue eyes named Ocean and have a light grey fella named Oatmeal currently. I feel they're fitting.

Idk why, but I feel certain animals just naturally should have names that start with certain letters. Horses should have C names. Bears J names.

My dog's name was princess

My cat's name was Mr. Kitty (Kitty for short). I did not realize at the time that this was Eric's cat in South Park lol
