The mainstream opinions will move left but the government will continue moving more right wing, as the two do not coincide whatsoever

Remember that many boomers used to be bleeding heart hippies. People change, especially once they actually start paying taxes.

People don't really change, we just assume that the small percentage of young people who are politically active represent their entire generation.

There are a ton of right-leaning millennials and zoomers, they just don't start voting until they are older.

Yeah, as people have already said. Boomers were the free love hippie generation. Plenty if them were straight up marxists when they were younger

No they weren't lol and even the few boomers old enough to have been hippies weren't a huge group of people, the vast majority of the country had nothing to do with that scene.

Yeah the hippies took over California with help from tech and it's a socialist hellscape according to everyone to the right of michael bennett. It used to be nixon and Reagan territory

California is a hellscape but it's firmly a neoliberal hellscape and not a socialist one. That's who the tech hippie boomers are and were, largely.

Well, boomers have been gradually dying off for quite a number of years now. And yet even though there must have been fewer boomers alive in 2016 than there were in, say, 2008, there was still a lurch to the right. So if you're assuming that most boomers are right wing, or that most right wingers are boomers, how was this possible?

In fact, why has American politics zigzagged between left and right at all, if it's been shaped by just one generation -- shouldn't we have seen instead a relentless drift to the left over the years, as that generation began dying off?

I don't know how else politicians get voted into power, except by the decisions that people make when they mark their ballot papers.

Again, the question: if all boomers are right-wing and they're the ones who've supposedly dictated who sits in the Oval Office, why has American politics zigzagged left and right at all? Unless, y'know, an entire generation isn't a single undifferentiated mass with a collective mind permanently focused in the one direction, or something.
