If you've never played a Dragon Quest game before, this is the best introduction to the series you could ask for. If you're a Dragon Quest fan and havent played it yet, then you need to get on this. This game made me re-approach how I view not just past Dragon Quest games, but every RPG I play from now on. Dragon Quest XI S is a near unrivaled masterpiece, one I wish I could erase my memory of and re-experience for the first time. Having said that, this second time through has been special in its own way. Going back and playing older Dragon Quest games has only increased my appreciation for it. This final version of the Definitive Edition of one of my favorite RPGs is a great send-off as we await the anticipated release of Dragon Quest XII.

I actually think DQXI might be one of the most overrated games of this generation. Like it's GREAT obviously, but it's not better than DQVIII, and there are at least three JRPG's on the PS4 that I'd choose over it. It's only overrated in the sense that people call it the "best JRPG of all time" and such nonsense. Tim Rogers describes DQ as "bedtime stories" and I agree with that - they're comfortable, light-hearted, games that you can play for 30-45 minutes at a time and enjoy in a kind of lazy blissful way.

I'm still playing through the Switch version, I think I'm near the end of the game I'm just cleaning up on quests

The Switch graphics honestly don't bother me, the game has such a distinct artstyle that any "lesser" graphics the Switch version has is like barely noticeable to me. Framerate dips sometimes but not nearly enough for it to affect me.

Im sure they will eventually sell a DQ11 enhanced edition with PS4 graphics and all the extras the Switch version added so they can sell the game a 4th time. Right now this is just a PS4 port of the Switch game so it wont have the PS4 graphics

2D mode
forge anywhere
characters follow you on screen
new costumes and other QOL updates

Doubtful, as soon as we hit 2021 we're going into the 35th anniversary hype cycle so it's going to be about the new games they've been working.

i think the explanation was they basically had to recreate the game from scratch to maximize performance on the switch, so it's not feasible/cost-effective to now go back and try to re-implement that stuff into the original game.

which is a reasonable explanation imo and better than the alternative of just leaving the new stuff exclusive to switch. of course it would be cool to have a best graphics + all content version but i think people underestimate the work that goes into these ports.

that said, i think $30 would be a more reasonable price for what this is, but eh.

EDIT: my ultimate point being, i think it's misguided/jaded to think square is doing this on purpose with a grand plan to siphon more money out of you with graphics DLC.

I don't think this is some grand plan, but I think their explanation is also completely bunk.

I also don't think there's any plans to fix it. They're completely satisfied as is.

but they still haven't done that for 9 so who knows when that happens. probably after this stops selling for a decent price.

yeah I don't think it would be unreasonable to sell this at a lower price. but at least it's no longer bound to the Switch and will actually receive decent discounts in the future, and it's on GamePass as well.

I think PS4 version of DQ11S I'll get digital because the box arts look pretty much exactly the same as the original PS4 version

I want to get it for Steam. Does "Switch graphics" just mean the stuff like lower quality textures and less trees? Or does it affect the resolution and framerate and other stuff a PC release should be able to do well?

I have no idea how people stomached DQ11's original battle speed. I've only played the Switch version and setting it to Normal speed feels like moving through molasses.

There were a few balance changes. Two bosses, I call them the Gatekeepers, got significantly weaker. One earlygame Slayer of the Sands: AoE attack is much weaker and Dora-in-Grey: no longer triple acts.

DQXI vanilla with Stronger Monsters turned on was largely perfect as far as difficulty goes but yeah holy crap those two bosses in particular were brutal.

This happens whenever you experience the faster version first. Have that problem in the Cold Steel games where not having Hi Speed mode on is intolerable, but only because I know I can turn it on.

While true, I think I would've had problems with it even without experiencing the game with the Fast option from the start. Animations take a while and everyone moves lethargically.

The higher Speed options aren't perfect either as they didn't adjust the sound effects properly, so everything is out of sync. Honestly the best way to experience DQ11's combat is in 2D mode.

Well, I'm playing through the demo and it looks pretty nice. Ultra HD and unlimited framerate makes everything feel incredible even if the textures are supposed to be worse (not that it makes much of a difference imo, considering the cartoony graphics). Combined with the orchestral soundtrack it's probably the most stunning way to play a Dragon Quest game.

By the way, does anyone know what the specifics of the "lying NPCs" Draconian condition is? I turned it on for fun.
