Everyone hyped it up to be as good as XCOM for me and it was like a "baby's first XCOM" game and I ended up being really let down. It was too basic and I had a hard time getting into it. I blame the Nintendo fans hyping it up.

The first levels, and most of the story was easy. Especially once you got a good team with a good setup. Some of the post game stuff was harder, though. Some of the end levels, too...

sniper luigi is awesome. some of the boss battles are a pain in the ass if you don't want to use the "right" ones for the fight.

I literally said "everyone hyped it up to be as good as XCOM for me" - And I didn't mean metaphorically. Everyone that had played it whipped out a Nintenboner and compared Mario + Rabbids as being equal to it with a different coat of paint. Should I be psychic and know they were all idiotic fanboys without any prior indications?

They didn't though. It was more like "If you like XCOM, you gotta pick up Mario + Rabbids. It's just as good, but with Mario characters. It's really good." They were pretty convincing about it without looking like morons. I was cleverly duped.

It was pretty enjoyable, but it got kind of stale as it went on (not helped by the fact that I used pretty much the same team the entire game), such that losing one boss battle near the end (Baby Bowser halfway through the final world) ended up causing me to drift away from the game rather than putting in the effort to win. Still, well worth playing.
