Besides pay, what is most important in a job?

I recently took a pay cut for a new job. I had to move due to wife's job relocation. This had me thinking about the non-salary benefits the job brought.

I decided to make a list of the top 3 things I want in a job. For me, they were:
1. Pay
2. Short commute time to work
3. Good job title

So since the job was a pay cut, it needed to have my #2 and #3, which it did, so I took it.

How about you? If you had to pick your most important non-pay job benefit, what would it be? You are welcome to share your top 2 or 3 on your post.

I actually put easiness of job and commute time above pay. Once my house is paid off I could live comfortably working at McDonalds.

  1. Pay
  2. High work autonomy
  3. Good coworkers
  4. Can fulfill some sort of personal mission (right now I'm able to help younger people early on in their careers, and that provides me a lot of satisfaction).

I highly recommend "So Good They Can't Ignore You" to anyone who is early on in their careers or frustrated where they are at. It goes over empirical data about what makes for satisfying work and why passion is kinda bunk in job satisfaction. It personally helped me a lot.

Uh probably the work itself. I declined a job in Georgia for 130k (weekly cocaine + stripper party money there) back when I was neeting it up for 5 months with my parents, and they were pissed that I passed on that. But it was for a company developing sensors to count and track customers who enter and exit stores. I couldn't even pretend to give a crap about something like that and I didn't have any mouths but my own to feed. So for me it's probably

1) The work
2) Good work environment (reasonable boss, no or very very few asshole coworkers)
3) Pay
4) Commute

Yeah I suppose the ultimate answer for me isn't exactly on here. Maybe passion for work is bunk but it's important to me.

My job is pretty specific and there's only one person doing exactly what I'm doing in my state.

I could do something similar to this for someone else and make a lot more money. But even though much of the work would like the same, it wouldn't be the same work.

Setting that aside, the biggest thing I care about that I can screen for right now is commute to work. I'm definitely going to try to negotiate regular work from home days after the pandemic

Impactful work, pay is nice but I want to be constantly building skills and gearing myself for the next job. Wouldnt want to make an assload of money doing dumb shit at a job and then I lose the job for whatever reason & now I need to take a pay cut and start over again at a new place

Interesting that pay is not #1 for many people here. Also surprised to see easiness of work the top choice.

Whether I like the job and the schedule are the most important, assuming I'll be making enough to live off of.

I'm okay with weird hours (i don't want a 9-5 job), but I don't want to work mandatory overtime.

I dont think easiness is the right answer but more work/life balance

I want a challenging job that makes me think but that I only do 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

I dont want stress leaking into my life

I would say good work-life balance is better. Perhaps then pay, or benefits. Easiness would likely come after, but if I wanted a really easy job, I might be able to find one, but I want to be paid decently.

So I thought about it some more and I'm very mission-oriented. I don't think it's exactly the same as company size or reputation. But my professional experience is all in small to medium nonprofits. I've only ever taken jobs where the work seems meaningful in a broader social sense.

1) Meaningful work. I've had high paying jobs that were complete bullshit jobs

Hated it. Soul sucking.

2) Good boss

3) Pay

4) Job that I will constantly be learning at.

Impact of work, doing a job that matters to the well being of society and promotes my personal growth (in terms of skills and character). Im happy doing that kind of work even if it doesnt pay that well. I also prefer work that challenges me to improve on myself than something that is easy
