the expression on his face when he pulls his hands out of his pockets

so how we don't know anything about columbo makes him into sort of like a force of nature. in a given episode we learn more about the murderer than we do columbo - we know their motive, goal, circumstance, social circle, etc. columbo sometimes doesn't roll in until halfway through an episode before methodically disrupting and dismantling everything we've just learned, which is a weirdly liminal position for the supposed main character to occupy.

the insight you gain into the character over time is just having seen him put his hand to his forehead in the same manner a bunch, seen him say "one more thing" and tell similar stories a bunch of times to see the performance for what it is, but it's still left mysterious what and how much is artifice, but also it's a mystery that's not worth caring about at all. if they remade this show they'd probably want to delve into his backstory and shit and fuck that.

4. richie and eddie (bottom)

i can think of few sitcoms with as complex characterization or as dynamic a relationship. at first blush it's all crude slapstick comedy, which is fine and good, but through that it expresses a bleak, desperate co-dependency. a lot of sitcoms, even good ones, have pretty static character relationships, but bottom deftly changes who has the upper hand constantly per episode. the comparison is a bit overegged, but you do see the waiting for godot inspiration come through.

6. gordon brittas (the brittas empire)

the pathos is weirdly affecting for how broad and outlandish the show usually is, like that episode where we meet his brother or any time helen delves into how he became the way he is. beyond that, it's just a fun character - an eternally clueless bureacrat self-assured in his competency without realizing the disaster he's causing around him. sort of a precursor to david brent as he's sometimes described, except with his efforts resulting in attempts on his life and several innocent deaths.

8. kim hanna (a-teen)

i like doha, and i get why others like doha, but kimha is the far more interesting character. season 2 is better than 1 for me due to its focus on kimha, though tbf a big part of what makes the character is the misdirection they pull off in season 1 that was only possible because she was the secondary lead.

being vague for the 0.1% of you who are going to watch this teen webdrama on my recommendation.

her entire arc is great, and the relationship between her and ha min is one of the most complex i've seen in a drama. fuck twenty twenty that shit sucked, give me a-teen 3.
