I find those series to be so boring. The only thing Bethesda does that I like is Doom.

I enjoy fucking around in those games quite a bit. the narratives are kinda shitty, but doesn't ruin the fuckin around.

I wouldn't say abhor but I think they are highly overrated. They fill a niche - there are really no comparable open world games with similar gameplay. But yeah the writing is uninspired, lazy trash and the gameplay isn't even that great, especially with each new installment.

No. They are really buggy, but they're pretty addictive.

How many hours did you put in?

I mean, it's fine if it's not your thing. But for me as a kid, I always wanted a more open rpg, where I could create my own character and roleplay.

I had a friend who I was showing the open world and he was like "What do I do, this is boring" And I'm like "Do whatever you want". He just didn't get it.

They've been removing the roleplaying from both series, though. You can choose what weapons you use but otherwise there's very little incentive to play as good or bad or skip out on quests since the end result is usually going to be the same.

What do you consider to be the book-ending "good games" (if any) for each series?

I feel that they could and should be way better games, but I'm still a sucker for them. I started a fresh Skyrim playthrough last month and I'm hooked all over again

I've only played TES 3, 4 and 5. Of those, Morrowind had the most interesting and creative world and story, Oblivion felt like the biggest improvement between the improved AI and physics. I hated Skyrim for its generic story about dragons, the fact that the story for each of the guilds is essentially identical just with different factions and characters, and there isn't much unique content to it. Plus they got rid of a lot of dumb little details that I think added depth to the world (basic stuff, like needing to use silver weapons or magic to attack ghosts).

Same with Fallout - didn't spend a lot of time in 1 and 2, really only played 3, NV, 4 and 76. Of those I thought 3 was just decent - it feels like 1960s Outer Limits in video game format, with each area generally being its own self-contained anthology-style story. New Vegas had the best pacing and a really tight story. 4 just felt like it was slapped together in a few months - the pace was TERRIBLE, unique locations were underutilized to a criminal extent, and there was too much emphasis on non-skill-based dialogue options that led you all down the same route (I remember reading the articles about how it's impossible to play through the game as a pacifist just because the game literally glitches out otherwise).

Fallout 4 literally has conversations where all the dialog choices lead to the exact same outcome

i like the style of bethesda games, there's not really many other developers that are making big open world games where you feel like you are exploring an actual world and organically uncovering different stories and stuff. normally most open world games are just giving you checklists of busywork to do.

however i do agree with some posts here saying that bethesda appears to be on a decline in quality. they make roleplaying games but you can tell they have been gradually removing a lot of the roleplaying elements from their titles. fallout 3 to fallout 4 is a pretty big example of this

I think Morrowind had the best story / characters / setting of the three that I played, but Oblivion had the better gameplay. If only because you didn't have to deal with dumb shit like trying to steal a diamond from a store where the NPCs always stood in one place 24/7 eff that

You are right. Since Oblivion it has been transitioning to more "game systems" based gameplay, rather than RPG choices. I want them to do both, not just one or the other. Oblivion and Skyrim are a blast, theyre still immersive, but as far as their quests, they pale.

This is absolutely correct. Morrowind and New Vegas are legendary. I like Fallout 3 very much also, but it's probably a bit closer to Oblivion/Skyrim.

The series have slowly been getting dumbed down over time, but they can still be fun to dick around in.
