I love Metal Gear Solid games a lot. Before my PS3 died. I would play Twin Snakes, 2 3 4 back to back. Growing up I found the story compelling, I even used some of the things that they were talking about in a class paper. (wow that was a while ago) However after reading another post about MGS. I really started to think about the writing . And it really wasn't as good as I remembered. And oddly the Last one made everything about nanobots as a catch all for any interesting thing that we saw. Still unsure why we spent so much time cooking eggs. Or watching someone cook, we weren't even able to cook them.

So do you think they were good. Or were they just good because they were hands down better than almost anything else out at the time . I mean it got you to change your controller port who would think of something like that.

The first 3 were, definitely. Series majorly stumbled after them, however.

whatever issues I might have with the story, at the end of the day, I think that the quality of a story is based on how much it entertains you and keeps you engaged.

so, yes.

IMO, at least.

1-3 were good for video games. 4 went flaming off a cliff

What continues to confuse me about how much people praise the story is just how cheesy all the dialogue is. I'd get it if people liked it as B-movie cheese, but no, it's treated like a work of art.

Mgs 1 to 3 I thought were peak storytelling in video games when i played them. But mgs4 really shat all over the series sorry to say.

The nanobots nonsense used to explain everything was plain lazy writing from kojima and expected better especially after mgs3. Never got into the series again after 4.

1-3 were great. 4 started getting a little too weird for me

I've seen a lot of people praise the MGS games as B-movie stuff.

Though in terms of plot and not having a bunch of pseudo-science BS to explain shit, I think MGS3 is probably the best story out of the entire franchise.

Yeah, I'd agree. MGS2 got way into the weird nonsense towards the end and made it hard to follow (though it freakishly forewarned about modern media consumption) and I didn't like how most of the cutscenes were just codecs.

Yeah, there's a lot of goofiness in MGS, but the second game absolutely nailed the current internet.

1, 2, and 3 are all good, but they are rather unconventional and have some weird quirks (especially 2). 4 is just stupid (although entertaining in a goofy way). 5 has a vaguely interesting idea for a story (the power of language and how it influences things causing a man trying to find a way to literally destroy the English language) but it falls flat in almost every way of telling the story.
