I figured the college experience was the main point, but I was wondering if there was also an actual learning interest there too.

I don't think he cares what he studies. Sounds to me like he just wants that idealized college life of partying and making friends.

@YoukaiSlayer 's got it. I'm looking for the college with the best odds of that.

Five years still seems like a lot to me. You could probably find a good community college to do what you said in less than a year. (Well maybe not now with the pandemic)

Go to UC Santa Cruz. We had a woman student in her 40's living in the dorms with a bunch of 20-somethings and she still had a lot of fun partying with us. There was also an older dude in his late 40's to early 50's living in the dorms. He was a bit more private, but he definitely hung out with us and partied with us a bit too. He still wishes me happy birthday every year. Age is just a barrier you're placing on yourself, when in reality most people probably don't care how old you are.

You could not do what I wanna do at a community college, because they have no dorms. I'm tryna live like those Do It For State kids.

UC Santa Cruz is a possibility, but I need to really narrow it down. Also, I don't wanna be that obvious old guy. I'd like to truly be one of the group. And that's rare in these Do It For State circles. I'm not necessarily saying I wouldn't be welcome, but they'd be like "Who's dad is this?"

You might find some of Mark Manson's writings helpful or insightful. I'll leave two relevant articles to start with:

https://markmanson.net/the-3-paradoxes-of-life

https://markmanson.net/dreams

I gave these articles a read. The first one, doesn't it basically just say "Do things in moderation, don't go crazy?" And the second one, doesn't that just say "Don't pursue fantasies that are dangerous or that you're not willing to put work into? And don't create imaginary versions of people in your head?"

I don't see how these apply to me. I'm willing to put in work.

Clinging to desperate optimism that the same potential in my 20s might be found in my 30s. Or my 40s. But now I see that it isn't.

Look at the hopeless, soulless 30 year olds. I'm sickened to see them.

Hey OP. Just wanted to chime in here with my own personal experience. We all go through that dark phase in life. At some point everyone does too no matter how happy someone might look. Ive suffered with depression for a decade and im 30 now. Almost killed myself last year because I had my breaking point, and a pointless factory job that felt like I was getting no where. So long story short, I went into therapy with a psychologist. Been doing that for almost two years now and I think it helps... it probably wont for the first while, but its something im glad I have. Its nice to be able to talk about anything because there is some things you cant just tell anyone like being molested when you were a kid, etc.

And as of these days whats going on? Well, not too much. Its always still a struggle. Im still on disability receiving ssi every month which helps and I save every penny of it and live well below my means and im not working but someday I would love to go back into some kind of work! I look on the bright side of things as of now since for one, I dont have to deal with annoying people. I always hate being around people... and I try to congratulate myself on the smallest of accomplishments like painting my first ever Bob Ross style painting I did a month ago.

So, overall... if anything to go by with my experience here is that also dont ever let ayone tell you that you are to old to do this or that. Fuck that shit... I wasnt too old to try to paint a painting for example, but I did it! Its important to have little accomplishments like this to lift you up out of that dark place. I dont have a plan with what I want to do with my life, but thats a good thing I see it as. Its never bad to wait on something than to jump right into it without much thought and research. I once though that back in 2013, I was going to go into the Army but I didnt and thank fuck for that! I wouldnt have done well, now considering my mental illness. I hope this helps though!

If someone asked me what my hobbies are, I struggle to answer because I've never really cared about much other than a couple of things. But eventually I started buying property and shit and found satisfaction in the maintenance and care of those properties and getting shit done on a regular basis. I wouldn't say I enjoy it but it keeps me from being bored and I feel like I'm making some kinda difference outside of my regular work.

Legality and morality aren't the same thing. The law for the most part tries to uphold what it believes to be morally correct, but you are right that it sometimes/often fails. It was legal to own slaves in the past, but we see now that that was obviously morally wrong. Saying something is creepy is more of a subjective statement though which isn't necessarily related to legal or moral values anyway.

I guess it could be just a value judgment. Like "something I'd rather not do because of how other people might perceive it." I don't think it necessarily makes it "wrong."

I get it man but I've kinda come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to get that. Satisfaction is the closest I've been able to come to 'enjoyment'. I don't know if its a personality thing or what, but I guess I'm just a hater and always will be.
