I know a handful of us have recently bought Entity's book. I know once I'm published I'd be stoked about people buying my book, but what would make me even more stoked is if people actually read it. So since so many of us just got it, it made sense to start a book club thread related to it.

I'm not good with structure, so I don't intend to make some sort of reading schedule for us. Read at your own pace, post your thoughts when you feel compelled, just make sure to mark spoilers. Maybe if we're lucky Entity will answer questions if we have any!

If you haven't got the book yet and want to participate, here's the link:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V5SFVCW

I personally plan on starting it once I finish Final Fantasy VII Remake (so probably Monday or Tuesday) and will be posting more of my thoughts on the book then.

No pressure! Since we're all reading at our own pace hopefully this thread will be active for a little while at least.

I don't really read. What's it about?

Here's the official description from Amazon:

"A young man from mid-2017 Earth ends up on a spaceship, bound for home dozens of light-years away, due to an accident involving a transmat device. The same accident turns him into a member of an alien race, particularly that of a young woman believed to be dead. Not wanting to go back, she takes on a new name and life among the society that's more than willing to take her in. Meanwhile, this distant, advanced society capable of such things as interstellar travel has a problem of its own involving a growing force of insurgents and cultists, and one of its more renowned and powerful members begins to question herself and her role among them. Now, both young women are thrust into a journey for identity, love, belonging, and family."

it's the same for me, my subconscious almost rebels on any structure. so, i can go from reading one chapter, to the entirety of a book in a sitting, ok?

I've had a busy couple days, so I'm probably more likely to start reading Wednesday or Thursday now. I'm like Clark though. Once I actually start it I'll probably finish it fairly quickly. I was thinking about doing a chapter a day, but I already know myself. I'll want to just keep reading instead of artificially breaking up my pace.

I don't have on. I went to look online at it, and saw that I need a Kindle (or other device). I do plan to get a Kindle (or other e-reader) soon, though. I remember asking about which ones were good once. I might get one coming up. Maybe after another payday or something.

I'll get you a Kindle Paperwhite if you send me the info where to ship it. If you want to hold out for a Kindle Fire, then another PotDer will have to throw down with me. Paperwhite is just a basic e-reader, Fire plays videos and stuff like that in addition to be being an e-reader.

Funny thing is, i bought Terri's book when it came out to support her. I didn't make a big deal about it. now that I'm such an evil meanie that never did anything to help her and apparently stood in the way of her living her best life, I'm never, ever going to read it or review it.

i know, joke's on me. my portfolio will never recover from the $3 hit.

Tbf, you can get the Kindle app on whatever device you typed that message from, so it's not inaccessible to anyone on this board. I do understand some people's desire for physical books, I used to be the same way, but after getting a Kindle, I love it!

I don't read much manga myself, but I read a lot of comics. My phone's screen is too small so I usually use my laptop or go for physical copies, but an e-reader that displays the artwork at a quality level would be really cool. Actually, the Fire might be worth it for that. I'm not sure. I've only ever had a Paperwhite.

honestly, i resisted the jump to the Kindle too, but i absolutely love my Paperwhite. reading at any angle in any lighting at any time with zero on-device distractions is a game changer. so is having several hundred books on a device the size of a picture frame. so is being able to change the font, kerning, spacing, and margins. also, i'll never have to move close to 2 tons of dead tree whenever i move house. I actually think the Paperwhite is the best kindle for pure reading.

As much as I like the digital format for things like books, games and movies, I will never completely abandon physical format. There is something about being able to physically hold and display a collection that I just love. I will probably always prefer it over digital.

Yeah, I agree. I was convinced I wouldn't like it because I didn't want to "plug in" to read, but the battery life is so insanely long that it's a non-issue. I still prefer the smell and feel of an actual book, but all the benefits you listed vastly outweigh that for me. Having a library in my pocket/bag is a very a comforting feeling for me. And since I travel for work it has lightened my luggage significantly!

I prefer reading from my bed so I would rather have something physical. A full length novel is too large to read from my phone.

i miss the heft of a physical book, and feeling of "depth" as you get into a thick book, but the advantages of the kindle format outweigh those things.

plus, i can read on my kindle without someone seeing the cover and trying to talk to me about what i'm reading if i'm reading in public. that's actually a huge pet peeve of mine. if i wanted to talk, i wouldn't be sitting here with a cup of coffee with my face buried in a book. I don't read performatively trying to strike up a conversation. if that's what i wanted, i'd go to a book club. i didn't pull out my "book" to not read.

I wouldn't try it on a Paperwhite because I don't think the quality of the art would hold (just judging by how some books covers and maps are displayed on Paperwhite), but the Fire definitely has the resolution for it. I don't know if they have apps supporting manga/comics or how big the screen is though.

seriously. i only turn on the wifi if i'm dumping new books onto it, otherwise it lives in my day bag on airplane mode and i have to charge it maybe once a month, and even that's just topping it off on principle. the form factor is close enough to a trade paperback, which was always my favorite size, and even out of the case, the damn thing is practically made by NERF. I've probably dropped the thing a hundred times and it doesn't have so much as a scratch.

i mean, for GNs I'd rather have physical still, but for pure text/literature? the thing is made to do one thing exceedingly well, deliver crisp text to the eye and it does that exceedingly well.

The Paperwhite is probably one of about a dozen products i think are 10/10 perfect for what they're made to do.

It happens to me, but it's not common. Though, I think more people using e-readers might be why, tbh... Because even if you have a physical book, they might not. Meaning they might not know what the cover looks like, or remember it...
