I feel like people would prefer that story than just saying you don't drink at all. Apparently some people think you're weird if you don't drink.

As an alcoholic, I've never once ragged on someone for not drinking, or have ever urged or pushed someone into having a drink with me. I have a bad problem and wouldn't want to have any responsibility in getting someone else addicted.

Do what you want, but be prepared for someone to pull you aside into a private convo and be like "hey man im an alcoholic too" and open up with you

You gotta be prepared to have a convo like that and not feel guilty for pretending to be afflicted with the addiction that the other person actually has

I think that there are plenty of people that struggle with substance abuse and the few that gain little control over their addiction should not be trivialized by somebody who hasn't walked that path.

I never got any weird looks for not drinking alcohol tbh. The "worst" thing they do afterwards is simply asking why don't I drink? I just tell them the truth, I grew up with a father who regularly got drunk and seeing how he acted when he was drunk was enough for me to never want to drink. Honestly I could have gotten a way worse drunk dad, my dad was simply one of those "happy drunks" and just talked alot more... lol. I know there's a lot of folks who get extremely angry when drunk... luckily my dad wasn't like that but still seeing him drunk often was embarrassing tbh. Made me put off with the whole drinking culture

Now if I wanted to get weird looks I just tell people that I don't drink coffee lol. For some reason people are shocked that I don't drink coffee >_>

I'm sober too, TC, so I get where you're coming from. I just tell people I don't drink. If they ask why I just shrug my shoulders and most people leave it at that. If they keep pressing I tell them that I don't drink because my dad was a raging alcoholic who beat me everytime he drank.. no one has ever kept on after that lmaoo

This is how it usually goes when you dont have or want to make up a story about someone close having a bad time with drinking:

Tell them you don't drink. They'll ask why. Tell then the truth i.e. it tastes like shit. They'll say a) lol you are a ***** b) thats because you havent tried XYZ drink so you should obviously try that c) They'll just acknowledge your preferences and leave you alone.

Since C never happens. For scenario A, stop hanging out with them. Not worth being friends with people that think posioning themselves is cool and not doing that somehow makes you stupid. For scenario B) yeah... just say you have tried all types of drinks and repeat you dont like how it tastes. Then they'll say that you just need to get used to it (lol wtf). At that point tell them that it makes no sense trying to force yourself to drink something you dont like that provides no benefits to you. In fact it comes with many downsides. If they still insist... then you'll need repeat: No, really I dont want anything to drink a couple of times until they give up.

Now if you are young and in the age where only cool people drink. Only scenario A will happen and there will be a lot of peer pressure to force you to drink. I still recommend finding other friends but you can always fake drink with them. (Make them think that you drink when you arent, its easy to fool drunk people).

I am a recovering alcoholic who's been sober for years, and I can tell you it doesn't feel cool in the slightest to admit to a past like that when it's the truth. I normally just say I don't drink. I've not been pressured over it.

Huh, I feel the exact opposite. People who have never had any kind of vice have this naivety about them that makes it hard for me to take them seriously. Like the way they view the world is wrong.
