I mean it's a short-sighted mantra.

The implication is that you, the individual, know better than all of "them".

And honestly "them" could be whoever you pick.

If I remember right he said this in Civil War. in the comic version of Civil War, Iron Man was literally locking up super heroes in a prison in another dimension. just for refusing to give up their secret identities. Cap was in the right when he was using this line.

Yeah, at that very specific point in time.

The problem is he's framing it as a life lesson, and an American ideal.

And it's neither. It's just something that was useful then.

That got retconned. it itself was a retcon also I think. I never finished that story but from what I understand it went like this

Hydra used time travel to go back and corrupt young Cap and make him grow up with their ideals. This changed the timeline and made Cap evil. But at the end of the story I think someone went back in time again and undid Cap's Hydra brain washing and restored the timeline to its original state. or something like that. but it wasn't that Cap was always evil. it was only due to time travel shenanigans

As long as you stand true to what nature and the universe wants for you, everything else is but an obstacle in your path, and as your choices on how reality affects your internal self, your ability to choose how to respond will determine the path you carve for yourself; whatever your internal-self puts its focus on and expends energy on, you will draw an equal amount of energy towards your outer-self. The body is powered by the mind, and the mind is powered by the spirit. If your spirit is weak or corrupted, everything else in your life will be as well.

The quote's a double edge sword. It's to inspire you to fight for your ideals and what you believe is right. Problem is, it's easy to misuse it and wave it behind terrible banners if given the chance.

It's a cool quote ideal for a Super Hero situation but things aren't so black and white enough that odds are you aren't standing up for the "RIGHT" and everyone else is "WRONG."

Wasn't there some comic recently with Red Skull or some such giving a motivational speech that backfired on the editors? Like if you cut out the mustache twirling "kill puppies and babies" it'd be something Cap might say.

Something about nature vs nurture

I guess DC did something similar with Superman, red son/sun. Superman lands in Russia instead of America and is raised by communism (so I guess the government? Stalin? A government mandated mother and father team?)

And there, I guess he's kind of a bad guy? But then also kind of not? He still has some of his ideals? So it makes for an interesting take on the nature vs nurture debate.

He was raised by the government, more or less.

It's kind of interesting because communist Russia is arguably a utopia under Superman, but it requires his constant attention and it still uses brutal authoritarian tactics to control dissidents.

I imagine the writer of this panel wrote it not realizing how many Americans want to stand up for their beliefs in fascism.
Or he wrote it in context of the story being told. Cap is saying that in response to superheroes doing fucked up shit in the name of whats right, and Caps there to remind you that he is objectively correct, and they are objectively in the wrong, because hes Captain fucking America. These types of tough, stand up for truth and whats right monologues are what Cap is there for, and thats exactly what the story called for in that moment.

Nobody who is a fan of Captain America will get to that part in the comic book and go, well fuck, I guess that validates all my fascist tendencies now!. Its just edge lords using a single panel, out of context, comic book meme quote to push their bullshit. If they were actually fans of Captain America, and not just posting dumbshit memes, they probably wouldnt be fascists in the first place.

Dont blame the writer of cheesy superhero monologues for the stupidity of the internet.
