Generally speaking, a school dress code cannot prevent a student from expressing religious beliefs. Thus, schools should permit students to wear such items as yarmulkes, turbans and head scarves (Anti-Defamation League, 2018).
https://www.idra.org/resource-center/ religion-equity-and-school-dress-codes/

Students may display religious messages on items of clothing to the same extent that they are permitted to display other comparable messages. Religious messages may not be singled out for suppression, but rather are subject to the same rules as generally apply to comparable messages.

Forgot this was a Duckbear topic with no link because he's a supposed journalist who doesn't understand sources...
Sure looks like the school is in the wrong from the information given. The girl did not violate the dress code until it was updated and restricting religious and political expression is also likely unconstitutional. Public schools are given some ability to restrict their students, but are not given full autonomy - they are not private entities, but government and thus must follow stricter non-discrimination laws to abide by the Constitution.

No they don't deserve millions, but also the adult administrators should've left the girl alone and brought it up with her parents. The kid doesn't know any better and why would you risk her health by having her swap her mask there. It's just so dumb.

That would imply that people actually use their common sense.

I'm a pagan and I don't see the issue here. If the mask were saying something hateful that would be a different story. But it's not. And punishing the kid before the rules were actively in place is bullshit.

True.

Glad we can agree on that at least!
I'd also be more okay with this girl's situation if the school policy simply banned all text on masks. Make it even across the board.

They didn't punish her. They gave her an alternative which she refused. And the idea of some umbrella rule covering any possible scenario is just dumb.

.....they are called dress codes. They exist. Every school I have worked at in two different countries for 10 years has had them.

Nope.

Sorry bud. You're just plain wrong all around.

Your arguments here are possibly even more ridiculous than some anti masker who records a store employee who doesn't allow service and then keeps repeating "policy isnt a federal law there is no federal law! Mandates are not laws!" Over and over as if they made a valid argument as to the actual situation.

If a law or school rule was put in place banning all head wear and it just so happens to violate a large enough group of mainstream religions then it is opening up for lawsuit after lawsuit.

In the case of headwear it almost always goes like this: "Wearing anything on the head is strictly foridden with exceptions for religious or medical reasons."

That's an umbrella rule. You prevent kids from wearing baseball caps or the like but also protect students with religious head gear or a cancer patient who wears something while undergoing chemo. Which was an issue years ago one of idiotic coworkers found themselves in

And yes making her switch her mask IS a punishment. It's not a severe one but it still is one by the standards of the school. The school had no rule or standard or record so they had no authority to deem her mask inappropriate. Especially at that age kids are developing and need structure around them. This just confuses them and makes them not understand what they did "wrong"

Who's the snowflake offended that a little 9 year old girl is wearing a "Jesus love me" mask?

They deserve to get sued if this is true. I mean kids everyday are forced to pledge their loyalty to this corrupted forsaken country but a lil girl wearing a jebus mask is too much?
