Not only is the game obscenely stingy with power-ups to begin with, but on this play-through I've gotten a fire flower in the Toad house that's supposed to give you a frog suit and a star in the Toad house that's supposed to give you a Hammer Bros. suit. What gives?

To be fair, the Tanooki Suit is a powered up version of the leaf. It makes sense it would be rare. >_>

but are there really only three in the whole game? Lol i remember when I was a kid being upset the hammer suit didnt show up more often

Yeah. It's not that the game gives you limited power-ups and places them in locations where you're likely to get hit sooner rather than later. It's that I'm not a good gamer.

I should go back to playing easy games like Contra and Ghosts 'n Goblins.

Super Mario World is designed to allow players to complete the game at their own skill level. Players wanting a challenge can avoid filling in the multicolored blocks or play the optional bonus levels. Players wanting an easy win can use the cape to fly over everything or take easier paths to victory. Even Bowser's castle is divided up between easy, medium, and difficult room sets.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is designed to make you miss things the first time around so that you have to back and get them the second time. You don't know when you enter Iced Land that you need to have the fire flower equipped to get the maximum enjoyment out of the first level. You don't know in Big Island that the next level after you acquire the hidden tanooki suit power-up has a tricky jump near the beginning for which you're likely to die on the first try. You don't know when you get a hammer that you're not supposed to break the first rock you come to, but instead wait for secret passages in other areas. Even some of Peach's hints are for things you missed the first time around.

I get that this was still the NES era and they didn't know they'd be doing battery backup memory one year later, but it is one aspect of Super Mario Bros. 3 which hasn't aged well. You can play the game from start to finish using leaves and fire flowers and have a really good time. But if you want to make the power-ups work, it's going to require repeat play-throughs.

Fortunately, there is the All*Stars version of the game.

Toad's Houses never give out Stars in SMB3. You must be misremembering.

Nine. Not three.

Even if you don't get any of the ones that can possibly give you one if lucky, it's still six as long as you know where they are.

(Five(six for All-Stars version) for Hammer Suits, three(four for All-Stars version) if you miss all the luck-dependent ones)

The Toad's House blocked off by 6-5 always gives you a Hammer Suit.

(In the All-Stars version, the other Toad's House next to 6-2 also always gives you a Hammer Suit; it only gives Mushroom/Flower/Leaf in the original NES version)

I probably got the star off of a Hammer Bro. encounter. It was the last item in my inventory at the time of my complaint. Whatever item I got from the Toad house, mushroom or fire flower, might've already been used by that point.
