Board 8 > Ys I is weird but I think I like it. (Spoilers)

This feels like an old ass game with the BUMP SYSTEM. I just got out of the mines with I think a harmonica I need to progress but it feels like everything is super vaguely strung together, but oddly enough I don't feel incredibly lost.

I dunno, I feel like more can be done with the combat, but it was strange jumping in and then hotfooting it to the next town so I can actually get stuff so I could fight right at the start of the game which I think is the intention?

I have a ton of items now I have no idea wtf to do with. But I think I'm closing in on the halfway point? The defense ring breaks this game though and I never feel like I'll ever die.

Anyway, pretty enjoyable. Does the second game improve on what's here pretty well?

Also I still have no idea how to pronounce it.

I just beat eeeees 1.

The bat boss was ridiculously unfun. Lol such BS. Aside from that, fun stuff. There was a bit too much backtracking for me for the final dungeon but the last boss was pretty challenging. Would have enjoyed it more if I could jump back into the fight without dialogue for that one.

I'll probably play Eeeees 2 next. I assume it probably improves on some stuff but will I be able to bump still????

Originals kept the bump system up through the 4th game but the remakes only keep it through the first 2 games

After the first 2 games you can really play them in any order. While there is a timeline it's really just character cameos

Ys origin might be a good choice being a prequel taking place 700 years earlier it's the one most linked to the first 2 games

If you play the remake of 3 it's the same engine and battle system as Origin

The original version of 3 was a Zelda 2 style side scroller

Wait they go from top down BUMPING to Zelda 2? This series seems wild.

I'll give it some thought. I'll probably take a break from the series after I beat 2 though. But I'll give it some thought when the Christmas Steam Sale rolls around.

Gameplay styles

Classic Ys - bump system
1-4 with 3 being a side scroller

Action Ys - adds jump and attack buttons, more zelda style but also platforming in dungeons
5,6,origin, 3 remake
(Note 5 is bad and only has a fan translation)

Modern Ys - Adds a party system. More story due to Trails influence
7-9 + 4 remake

I don't know wtf Falcom was thinking with the third boss in this remake, since it's just so much harder than anything else in the game and I think even japanese fans think it's one of the hardest in the entire series. I could sort of understand making it harder to force you to get the silver sword before going to the tower, but I'm pretty sure there's a plot flag that you have to go back and do it anyway if you haven't. And if you're strong enough to beat it, you're probably at max level so fighting anything else in the second half of the game is pointless and a waste of time.

It's probably part of the reason some people think the Turbo CD version is the definitive one for 1+2, instead of the remake.

Ys 2 is better than the first, although I think Falcom's best early games (and by "early" I mean more like basically everything before Ys 6) are the Brandish series. Doubt anyone would agree with me though ha ha. I'm still a bit disappointed that XSeed never tried to port the Dark Revenant to PC, and Falcom never remade the rest of the Brandish series. :(

I beated Ys II tonight.

It's kind of different. More robust, but literally every boss cannot be beaten with my favorite weapon THE BUMPING SYSTEM. Except for the biggest dick in the game and the final boss, which was satisfying to BUMP them to death.

I had to grind super hard because for a while I thought I just had to hop around as a roo before the one boss in the monster area and then... Whoops, way underleveled. And then I overlooked the weapon store in Ramia Village which also sucked.

So I got way over leveled everywhere but hey! At least my name isn't Tarf.

Pretty fun though, but even I have to admit I was a little tired of BUMPING and fireballing by the end of the game.

Stupidly OP bosses are a recurring trend. I played Oath earlier this year and it was about as bad as 2 that way.

I think the ones that annoyed me the most were the head vomiting worms or the spider boi.

Spider boi was the one I was way underleveled for and then once I (over)leveled up and got better gear, I beat him before he had a chance to even do any attacks. Lol

if you're planning on playing all of them I would play Ark of Napishtim (VI) before Origins and Oath in Felghana (the remake of III). it's after them storywise, but more dated gameplay wise which made it harder to play through when I gave it a go.
