Today was the Melbourne Cup, which is the Aussie equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. I shirked some personal responsibilities and went to the pub with a friend of mine, and I put $20 towards the horses.
I put $10 on 2 horses. Both of them were $5 to win, and $5 to place - basically, even if my horse only appeared in the top 3, I would make my money back. My picks were Vow and Declare, #3, and Twilight Payment, #6. Vow and Declare didn't place in the top 3. Twilight Payment won the Melbourne Cup. If TP won, my $5 turned into $130. If it placed, my other $5 turned into $36.25. In total, I won $166.25 - it won, and it placed. I would have won more if I put the whole $10 into Twilight Payment winning the race, but I don't care. It was incredible that I picked the right horse at all. I shouted beers for the boys, and I tipped the woman who served my first post-win beers $20. --- Make it through this year, if it kills you outright.
