The only real rule is "make sure your audience understands it," and given the extremely narrow audience for that particular acronym (basically consists entirely of the small handful of labs studying the phenomenon) and the fact that said audience has generally participated in coming up with the acronym themselves, I'd say it's fair game.

It really comes down to the fact that people often try to pick cool-sounding acronyms first then fit a title to that acronym.

In like the first episode of agents of shield they ask what it means to him and the agents like it means someone really wanted their acronym to spell out shield.
