I don't understand the hate these movies get.

They're definitely not as good as the original trilogy but they're fun movies.

I'm a bit over halfway through Desolation of Smaug though. I think most of the hate I see is for the third film.

the hate comes from all the ass dragging they had to do to stretch that book out into three movies.

This. IIRC it was only supposed to be 2, but studio greed got in the way so they had to awkwardly stretch 2 movies into 3 really long ones.

This, plus the cringe worthy dwarf/elf falling in love subplot, plus the 48 fps, plus the awful CGI (seriously, how does LOTR look so much better when it was made over a decade earlier?). Just all around awful movies. I'm still surprised at how badly they fucked it up.

It was the filmmakers decision. From how they wrote it, it was honestly better to make it 3 instead of 2. But, they probably shouldn't have wrote it that way in the first place.

Yeah, they are not terrible, if you think of them basically as a tv series. Honestly, it makes me wish each of the 3 LotR parts had been longer. I'm only bothered by the fact that Hobbit is so close to the length of LotR.

The first movie was great, and so was Smaug and the part with the barrels. Third movie was kinda bad but still fun.

Should have been two films

The Hobbit
Ends where they kill Smaug.

There and Back Again
Covers the Five Armies and allows for any other stuff Hollywood wanted to add.

So you agree witth their 3rd movie as is? Cause that's basically what you're describing, except you're saying they should have squished the first two together? I think those first two would have too much content to have the movie end with smaug, while the 3rd one is not enough to be a movie by itself.

Cause the filmmakers said, when they were trying to cut it as two, they ended with the crew arriving in Laketown, but it wasn't a good enough ending by itself. So then they changed it to three movies, so they could end the 2nd with the Smaugh showdown. When I heard them explain it that way, it made more sense why they made that decision.

No. The Hobbit [movie 1] should have adapted the book almost in its entirety without adding stuff thst wasn't from the book. TABA [movie 2] would have some creative freedom especially since Bilbo was KO'd most of the battle. Hollywood could have added extra stuff to reach feature length as long as it made the movie good.

So the Eagles.

It's my understanding that they aren't supposed to interfere too much, right?

Why are they allowed to save the day in this battle and again at the Black Gate in ROTK

IIRC The Eagles show up at the end of the day because the battles over and they're kinda cowards tbh.

This battle they kind of just helped because Gandalf asked for a hand. They were probably a little peeved since after they helped out they plopped Bilbo and friends on top of a random ****ing mountain.

The first two are mostly fine as lesser, more child-friendly versions of LotR (except the atrocious barrel river scene). The scenes where the dwarves arrive at Bilbos house, and Bilbos encounter with Smaug are highlights. The third film is just a big pile of dog shit, with cgi overload and boring action scenes. The whole trilogy suffers from the inclusion of Legolas/elf girl, and Gandalfs solo adventures.

I was so turned off by the first one I never bothered with the others. Parts of it were really dumb like Radagast the Brown being a shroom taking hippie with a rabbit sled. That's really minor, I know, but it sticks out in my memory.

What's really stupid is that they cut Radagast out of the LotR movies due to time constraints, but inserted him into The Hobbit movies to have more shitty garbage filler to stretch it out to three movies.

So I was looking up info on the extended editions and apparently they left a LOT of stuff out and are much better movies.

Like Thorin's funeral - that's such an important moment and the scene is like 3 minutes long and they left that out but gave us drag queen Alfrid?

And the dwarves and elves straight up murdering the fuck out of each other before the orc army shows up

It's almost like they intentionally left important parts out of the theatrical version in the hopes you'd churn out another however many tens of dollars the extended edition goes for in addition to your theater ticket and your theatrical edition home video purchase.

That claim sounds suspect. Literally her character's only purpose was to be part of a love triangle. I can't imagine she'd ever be added in a scenario where that wasn't the case.
