I don't remember the exact phrase but I think it goes something like, "If you can beat 'em, shit all over the idea of a democratic government to maintain your power like a total piece of shit."

There should have been riots in 2000, but no one cared, not even Gore. This is that legacy. There will be no riots of substance.

Whelp, that pretty much confirms that even if the Dems win and take the senate the supreme court will completely invalidate it give them the finger and keep Trump in power, maybe even go the extra mile and toss away the results that resulted in Dems taking the senate, too because what are they gonna do about it?

I thought the whole point of life-long appointments was to remove any sort of political pressure or corruption from the bench so I don't get what they have to gain unless it's straight up corruption.

Yes, there are now more hard right wingers on the supreme court who stand to benefit from having republicans in power financially, they're suppose to be the impartial people in the land yet instead they're there to help their team and they want that hard 9 supreme court just as badly as the rest of the republicans do.

Roberts opinion seems to be that the federal courts cant come in and change state election laws this late in the game in an election year. The PA case came from a decision from a state court, while the WI case came from a lower federal court.

It is reducing time. Ballots must be received by November 3rd. Everyone voting in person has until November 3rd. Absentee have until yesterday.

any citizens overseas including all military personnel who have not yet voted have effectively been told they are not eligible to vote this year by a surprise SCOTUS ruling

I read through a bunch of this stuff at work today and have a few thoughts.

First, Kavanaugh's opinion is pretty flawed and looks like it was done quickly. Some of the cites aren't correct and his underlying opinion isn't based on fact. In sum, a fundamental basis for his entire argument is that there is a need for states to have all the ballots in on election night so they can call a winner then even though that isn't true anywhere.

He also picked part of a sentence from a law review article that supported his argument even though the article itself argued the opposite. It's bad lawyering that would get thrown in someone face in court (and in my opinion, one of his clerks should lose their job for it).

Second, people are overstaying the significance of this opinion. This and the PA case involve the limits of state and federal power in preparing for a federal election. Does it provide incite into what the SC thinks of late mail in ballots? Yes. But it's really in the context of what states can and can't do and the timing of those decision.

I think the idea that Kavanaugh or ACB will make a decision in a few months that favors Trump because they owe him something or are themselves corrupt is a bit dramatic. Did the GOP take advantage of the rules to appoint conservative justices? Yes, but this opinion in and of itself doesn't give me the impression that we are all doomed to repeat 2000.
