This is caused by our culture and our political leadership. As shown in this topic, too many Americans both never want to be told what to do no matter how beneficial, are conspiracy minded, and believe reality is simply a matter of opinion and that disregarding it is being a "free thinker" or "independent"

This has negative consequences all the time, but it's literally life or death with a pandemic that doesn't care about what these people think about anything, it simply uses them as vectors.

Then our leaders model bad behavior and give positive feedback to these toxic mindsets because they're reliant on these same people.

That's how we get where we are.

Yeah, that's what happens when infection rates are rising and have reached higher values than any previous spike.

Fixed that for you. I know you Trumpists hate facts and reality, but it's fact that coronavirus is getting worse than it was and we're having record amounts of people test positive.

Did Europe have the same cultural and political failures as the US? Why are they getting hit even harder?

Did all of Europe go back on lockdown? Last i heard it was just Ireland. They all need to go back on lockdown though their numbers are getting way too high.

So what is the WHO talking about when they say lockdowns are not a viable measure?

Yes. They laughed at the US because some of them took it more seriously for a little bit, but then they relaxed way too much. These problems aren't uniquely American, they're humans in the 21st century problems. The problem is just the most terminal in America right now.

South Korea is not an island, it's not remote, parts of it are highly dense, and their infection pattern started at the exact same time ours did. Why are they having way less issues than us or Europe? Because they took it seriously from the start and haven't stopped.

Relevant quotes:
As you can see, Nabarro said, We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus. Note the word primary here. He did not say, do not advocate lockdowns as a means of control of this virus. Nabarro continued by saying, The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, wed rather not do it. Note the words rather not do it as opposed to should not do it or will not do it.

So, where exactly was the reversal of the WHOs position? Did Nabarro actually admit something new? Not really. Again, pay attention to the words primary and rather not do it. Nabarro really never said that lockdowns should not be used at all and that everything should be opened now and kept open forever.
Nabarro simply was reemphasizing what the WHO and many public experts have been saying all along: the way to tackle the Covid-19 coronavirus is through layering various policies and interventions in a coordinated, organized way.

In fact, no country in the world has really remained under lock down throughout the course of the pandemic. Quite the opposite. Consider the countries that have been most successful at responding to the pandemic to date. New Zealand, for example, opted for the go hard and go early route: aggressively closing things up quickly to prevent the Covid-19 coronavirus from getting a foothold (or maybe a spikehold) in the country. Such early action kept the number of cases from low to zero, allowing New Zealand to re-open again and more effectively contain any subsequent outbreaks

Similarly, since the start of pandemic, Taiwan and South Korea have used aggressive testing and coordinated national test-trace-and-isolate programs (along with other measures such as widespread face mask use) to keep the number of new Covid-19 coronavirus infections under control.

Similarly, lockdowns may still be needed, either as a temporary measure to quell an outbreak for example or to put the brakes on when things have gotten out of control.
So before you believe that the WHO has somehow reversed its position, take a time out and look more carefully at the who, what, when, and where something may have been said. In the interview, Nabarro didnt really seem to say much of anything new. Instead, he simply said what many scientists and pubic health experts have been saying all along.

With california opening back up and SF becoming lax on the whole situation, I'm going to quit my job.

My job is starting to let people in and we have the highest coronavirus cases in the city. My health is worth more than a paycheck. I'll just focus on being a student. Hopefully, all this blows over in 2 years.
