I'm grateful that people you've talked to who had it didn't get severe symptoms, but loads of people have gotten it and it seriously fucked them up or worse. Considering that and people are contagious while being asymptomatic for weeks makes it pretty dangerous.

That's entirely understandable and a concern I've shared.

I limit the activities I do participate in though. Basically just martial arts training which I was terrified of doing for the last six months, and rock climbing on weekends. I work remotely and don't interact with people in my neighborhood up close. I monitor my health on a daily basis and limit how much time I see my parents.

If you live with them, which a lot of posters here probably do, I can see and understand the concern. But a lot of people don't seem to understand that what they've developed is a full blown pathological fear akin to being afraid to climb a step ladder to change your light bulb out due to acrophobia.

If you're concerned for your parents and limiting where you go because you spend a lot of time around them, good for you. You're doing what gives you the most peace of mind and I don't take issue with that. But after getting extreme depression which IS dangerous to me from 6 months of staying on lock down, I've determined that doesn't really work well for me. As a result I've got a poster on here hoping my family dies of COVID because he thinks I'm a republican scum bag. (Politics were never part of the discussion and he is wrong.)

If we overwhelm the healthcare system most of those 20% are going to start dying (not to mention the knock-on effect of insufficient healthcare resources for other treatable injures and diseases). That's the figure to worry about.

my job forces me to interact with large numbers of (different) people in confined spaces, and i don't live with my mother. i contact trace and so many of the people i've interacted with directly have caught the virus that I have averaged one test a month

she's elderly, and i visit her occasionally--outside, and i won't hug her unless i've self-quarantined for two weeks beforehand.

she understands. she knows i am acting in her best interest. and all the same, we are far less close than we used to be.

it sucks and when you claim people who are really trying their best to do their part are acting out of fear for their own safety, you sound far too much like the conservative politicians who are overtly serving their investor-class donors when they demand people stop trying to do their part and get back to spending money

See. This is a line of argument I can actually take seriously.

I do take solace in that when cases WERE bad in my State, our scum bag of a President was ignored and lock down went into effect. I watch active cases in my State on a daily basis, like I monitor the weather. When it gets to a certain point, that's a bad time for me to be doing things and I pull the plug.

I'm thinking sometime in November I might need to lock down again, but things have not gotten bad yet again IN MY STATE, and I'm hoping that it doesn't.

If/when it does I don't plan on living in denial like others here have assumed I will.

But the thing about the outbreaks and overflows of hospitals in Italy is that Italy lives a very different life style than us. I've been to Italy and you can't have lunch there without being side by side with strangers. Have a conversation with someone and they're accustomed to hugging and giving you a peck on the cheek goodbye. It's much more difficult to keep people at arms length in Europe, and a lot of the population is big families that live together, with their grand parents.

That's good. Just keep in mind that it's really hard to tell when you're going to hit the elbow in the exponential curve until you're in it, and that the data we have is trailing the actual spread of the disease by 5-7 days.

tbh i think at this point whats more important is maintaining a contact tracing record set so you can notify all the people you do have contact with when you have a positive test, and be notified by them if they do

For me mostly keeping up...

+Good about not going out. Been to exactly 1 restaurant/theater or other non grocery store or government service(BMV I think is the only one) since March outside of work.
+Always wearing a mask indoors aside from my apartment and I pull it up if I to pass close to someone outside
+Use hand sanitizer after every cash transaction or contact with a guests check/card. Wash at least once an hour + when using bathroom.
+I glare at people who dont ware their masks to make them feel unwelcome and hopefully realize what they forgot/be shamed into wearing one(A lot of food service has only have token enforcement. Essentially a sign on the door but a policy of not denying service or even requesting guests without one to wear masks.
+DnD group now plays on Zoom.

-Very lax on cleaning at work. Most shifts I simply dont have time. I am supposed to sanitize doors, bathrooms and other high touhcpoints every hour...anyone who works in food services knows practically any place that cannot and will not happen. I am the only person on door/carryout/register so yeah right. I also have to do a chunk of food prep and a bit of dishwashing because we dont have anyone back of house except grill cooks most shifts right now. I was religious about it at the start but as people got comfortable dining in and more prepped started doing delivery and carryout it became impossible most days to do according to company or expert guidelines. I do clean tables between seatings(when needed. That is a server job normally)
-Have attended 2 small outdoor family gatherings(Under 20 people) Outside that no gatherings larger then 4. Usually 2-3 people counting myself are in my apartment if anyone is over at all.

I know my local hospitals have been taking out of state patients to help, but they've had to suspend that as our state case rate is spiking. And I haven't heard about any local doctors or nurses traveling to hot spots to help for the last couple of months.

The local case rate in my county isn't too bad, which is nice personally, but I'm still concerned about the number of places spiking at the same time.
