I finished up The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman over the summer. Excellent books IMO. It does a great job at sidestepping the inevitable Harry Potter comparisons, and although it dips a little far into the "teenage angst" vibe, it makes up for it with some excellent world building and a great cast of characters.

Sphere by Crichton.

I wanted something for Halloween and that fit the bill for me. The ending was alright but overall the book was pretty good. I haven't seen the movie yet and didn't know about it until this book/month.

I'm currently reading "Satan is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers" by Charlie Louvin. It is absolutely wild. I picked it up because I really like the Louvin Brothers' music, but even if you're not a fan, it's totally worth reading if you have any interest in some real-life Southern Gothic stories.

Before that, I read "Farthest North College President," about the founder of University of Alaska. Also great and surprisingly funny; it isn't a dry academic read, that's for sure.

Definitely agree that it starts slow, but those books definitely get going later on, and they end up making for excellent high fantasy. Personally, I think I enjoyed Sanderson's Mistborn series a bit more, but overall I think you can't go wrong with his work. Stormlight just takes a little time to set up the worldbuilding and stuff. IIRC it's planned to be a pretty long series, like 10 books, so the first one is definitely a primer.

The Library at Mont Char

I was interested because it was about some OP magician taking in a handful of kids and teaching each of them to be an expert in one specific thing to the point where nobody could dream of ever challenging them in that area. Examples are talking to animals, necromancy, languages, combat, and so on. Wish it was a series instead of just a one shot thing because the author only barely touched on the process on how they learned their craft over the years and mostly focused on a murder mystery.

Ancient Economies of the Northern Aegean: Fifth to First Centuries BC by Zofia Archibald

Basically goes over the cultural and economic developments of Thrace and Macedonia. It fits into my current interest in the similarities between Thrace and Macedonia which I think are often overlooked, in no small part due to surviving hellenocentric sources and modern day nationalistic conflict but I find it all p interesting.

In general I seem to enjoy the first 95 percent of his books and the endings always lose me. I wasn't a big fan of the ending of The Stand and i REALLY wasn't a big fan of the ending of Under The Dome lol aliens (ending spoilers)
but the rest of the book is usually top notch.

IIRC the first book is pretty tame although there's some violence here and there
It gets more violent and sexy in the later books, in the 5th book Frank was clearly horny >_>
It's not too far from how Star Wars presents itself, so if you think Star Wars would be too violent for your kid, Dune will be also

Not really no, not in the way of overly sexual imagery or situations. It's very complicated though, so I imagine a few of the concepts and nuances might be lost on a youngster, but still worth it. But no, no surprise NSFW type of things.
